About this Job
The Academic Advisor, Arts & Sciences Lead Advisor, works as a member of the LSUS Student Success department performing a range of tasks enhancing and supporting our academic advising team and students. The Student Success Center at LSU Shreveport champions student-centered excellence, offering comprehensive resources, services, and programs – including Academic Advising, Academic Success, Career Services, First-Year Experience, and more – to promote a smooth transition, build academic and life skills, foster persistence and resilience, and empower goal-oriented success. This role emphasizes personalized, holistic advising support for undergraduate students. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing student success and retention by removing barriers, fostering engagement, and supporting academic achievement and career readiness. Reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Advising, College Advising Coordinator, and is a full-time, unclassified position. Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's degree in student personnel services, higher education administration, psychology, counseling, or a related field.

+ 3 years of related experience.
+ Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Advanced degree in student personnel services, higher education administration, psychology, counseling, or a related field.
+ Prior experience in student advising, student support, or related roles.
+ Experience working in First-Year Experience programs, or similar transition programs.
+ Eligibility to teach at the college level in accordance with SACSCOC accreditation standards (Master’s degree or higher).
+ Experience teaching college-level courses, particularly to first-year students.

Job Duties and Other Information
Position Duties & Responsibilities:
Academic Advising & Student Support
+ Serve as a university-wide academic advisor, guiding students through course selection, degree planning, and academic progress across all majors.
+ Act as the lead advisor for the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), supporting disciplines in the Liberal Arts (e.g. Fine Arts, Criminal Justice, Mass Communication, History, English) and Sciences (e.g. Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics).
+ Provide holistic advising by exploring academic, career, and personal development, tailoring support to individual student strengths, challenges, and aspirations.
+ Administer and interpret assessment tools (e.g., College Student Inventory, Appreciative Advising Inventory) to better understand student needs and tailor interventions.
+ Conduct individual and group advising sessions to clarify degree requirements, engage in career exploration, set goals, and develop personalized academic plans.
+ Teach at least one (1) First-Year Seminar annually to promote early engagement and student development.
Transition & Onboarding Support
+ Guide new students through admissions, orientation, course registration, and campus resource navigation.
+ Support college readiness initiatives such as summer bridges and first-generation programs to facilitate a smooth transition.
+ Promote campus involvement and healthy habits fostering academic, personal, and career growth.
+ Assist in engagement campaigns and events that encourage persistence and success.
Success Planning & Intervention
+ Develop personalized success plans based on students’ academic backgrounds, interests, and goals.
+ Collaborate with campus support services to connect students with resources such as campus health and wellness, disability support, financial aid, and academic support.
+ Proactively identify at-risk students and initiate early interventions.
+ Use real-time data and advising technology to monitor progress, implement timely support, and evaluate outcomes.
+ Assist in retention efforts through targeted outreach and ongoing success strategies.
Career Development Integration
+ Incorporate career readiness activities into academic advising, encouraging experiential learning, internships, and networking opportunities.
+ Support students in aligning coursework, co-curricular activities, and experiences with their career goals.
+ Partner with Career Services to track career milestone achievements and ensure seamless support for long-term success.
Data & Continuous Improvement
+ Maintain accurate, confidential student records and document advising interactions.
+ Gather student feedback to improve advising practices and support initiatives.
+ Collaborate within teams and departments to analyze data and refine approaches to improve student outcomes.
Professional Development
+ Stay informed about university policies, degree requirements, and emerging practices in student advising.
+ Pursue ongoing training related to appreciative advising, student development, career readiness, and culturally responsive practices.
+ Engage in professional conferences, workshops, and certification opportunities to enhance advising skills.
Physical and Environmental Demands
Light Work– Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
