Job Description:
Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a _Civil Engineering Intern_ to join our summer 2026 internship program. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, and we’re working hard to safely provide our customers with the safe, reliable, affordable energy they depend on. In addition to the meaningful work we do, we offer work-life balance, competitive pay and benefits, an employee incentive plan, and both a 401k employer-match and a pension plan, making Idaho Power one of the best employers in the state.
What does a** **Civil Engineering Intern** **do for us?
Operating under supervision and with significant oversight, an Engineering Intern works within an assigned group to assist engineering staff while gaining valuable skills and experience. They may interface with internal departments and external organizations, receiving regular guidance from leaders and other engineers.
Transmission Line Design Optimization:
As Idaho Power’s power supply portfolio continues to change by adding more renewable resources and retiring older technologies, the already strained transmission system continues to become a more vital element in the electrical grid. IPC is experiencing an exciting time of growth that will require vital new transmission lines to be designed and built. Along with these new lines many of our existing lines are nearing the end of their usable service life, which will require rebuilding or extensive maintenance. Designing these transmission lines will require a group of skilled engineers for many years to come. The intern will be asked to design a new or rebuilt section of transmission line. The intern will be given a route, survey, voltage, environmental limitations, and end points. With this information the intern will be tasked with engineering the most efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible design. The intern will need to choose pole heights, span lengths, structure types, pole locations, constructability, conductor tensions, sags, and other design criteria. To demonstrate and prove the best design the intern will review their design periodically with Idaho Power transmission design engineers through a QA/QC program. Along the way, the intern will identify and perform improvements to the existing design process and standards, including line tensions, load cases, structure families, and assemblies. The intern will also support the transmission group on additional engineering requests throughout the service territory.
