Are you seeking a career with a company where purpose connects. BAE Systems maybe the answer to your search. We are looking to hire a Shipyard Competent Person to join our Maritime Solutions Jacksonville Team. The selected candidate will exercise the following duties and responsibilities.
Work includes, yet not limited to, the inspections of vessels and shops in varied weather conditions. Physically involves climbing, bending, stooping, stretching and work in locations such as inside confined spaces, at heights and close quarters. Included in the position is an occasional need to perform Shipyard Competent Person duties to support projects and investigations. Identification and correction of hazardous conditions to maintain a safe and healthy working environment. Incident investigations and reporting. Knowledge of Federal and State OSHA Regulations. Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items and a variety of consensus standards.
+ Conducts atmospheric testing and space inspections to determine that the area is safe for workers and hot work.
+ Maintains and ensures calibration of atmospheric testing equipment is conducted daily prior to use.
+ Maintains records of inspections and tests.
+ Tests hollow structures for explosive atmosphere and recommends safe work practices.
+ Conducts training in confined and enclosed space entry.
+ Monitors sub-contractors production activities to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and contractual safety standards.
+ Conducts inspections of all spaces and tanks each morning prior to the start of work.
+ Applies gas free work scope processes to production needs while ensuring compliance to NFPA 306 and associated regulatory requirements.
+ Monitors all spray paint operations.
+ Walks with the Marine Chemist for all spaces that require Marine Chemist Certifications.
+ Maintains compliance with OSHA 1915Maritime requirements of Subparts B, C, D and P.
+ Evaluates, verifies, and signs all hot work request forms for the entire availability each day.
+ Re-posting of all spaces after Marine Chemist Certifications are obtained.
+ Re-assessing spaces and updating logs after paint operations to change back to hot work operations when applicable.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
Typically a High School Diploma and 5 years work experience or equivalent experience.
+ Interact with employees, management, customers, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.
+ Expert knowledge in SCP requirements for commercial vessels
+ Expert knowledge of NAVSEA standard items
+ Ability to provide training to groups of various sizes.
+ Perform evaluation and testing in various environments including but not limited to noise, illumination, atmospheric conditions (confined spaces), ensuring proper working environments are established and maintained.
+ Knowledge and skills of computer use and programs using Microsoft Office programs Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
+ Populate and maintain department data bases, archiving, report writing, maintaining files, etc.
+ Capable to work in a variety of physically demanding environments and weather conditions. Including climbing, bending, crawling, working at heights, inside of enclosed and confined spaces, heat, rain, wind, etc.
+ Previous maritime and / or military experience.
+ Must be able to acquire and maintain DBIDS Defense Biometric Identification System access card.
+ OSHA Maritime Safety Training (10/30 hour) - provided if not certified.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
Ability to understand and carry out written or verbal information or instructions left by Marine Chemist, Coast Guard authorized persons and Certified Industrial Hygienists.
Knowledge ofSubparts B, C, Dand H of 29 CFR1915.
Ability to calibrate and use testing equipment including but notl imited to,oxygen indicators, combustible gas indicators, carbon monoxide indicators, and carbon dioxide indicators, andto interpret accurately the test results of that equipment.
Ability to perform all required tests and inspections which are or may be performed by a competent person as set forth in Subparts B, C, D and H of 29 CFR 1915.
Ability to inspect, test,and evaluate spaces to determine the need for further testing by a Marine Chemist or a Certified Industrial Hygienist.
Ability to maintain records required by 29CFR 1915.
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $58839 - $94143
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
