    Job Summary

    The Wilson Student Team Project Center and Robotics Department are looking for a team-oriented professional to provide digital fabrication support for faculty, staff and students in our Robotics Makerspace at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. You will instruct and mentor users on a variety of digital fabrication tools in our makerspace, and will design and fabricate custom parts and robotics systems to support faculty teaching and research projects using our equipment and other equipment available on campus. You will model a professional safety culture while maintaining work areas, tools, and supplies with the support of part-time student lab assistants. You will have opportunities to assist with selecting, installing, operating and maintaining 3D printers and other digital fabrication equipment in Robotics and other departments. You will be comfortable adapting to new situations and resolving small issues independently. You will report to the supervisor of the Robotics Makerspace and work closely with the staff of the Wilson Student Team Project Center to support student project teams and to codevelop training materials.

    Responsibilities*

    + Design, fabricate, and assemble robotic systems and 3 dimensional models for instructional laboratories and research activities in Robotics and other departments.

    + Instruct and mentor students in the proper use of 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC tools, electronic test equipment, and soldering tools. Support the Robotics Makerspace Supervisor in developing and refining standard training materials, operating procedures, and related systems.

    + Assist faculty, staff and students with selecting, installing, operating and maintaining 3D printers and other digital fabrication equipment in Robotics and other departments.

    + Under the direction of managers, promote an equitable and inclusive environment and a professional safety culture within the Robotics Makerspace and instructional laboratories. Maintain working areas, machinery, equipment and working conditions in compliance with accepted standards.

    + Provide oversight of part-time student lab assistants including assisting in the training of new team members, communicating instructions, and assigning work to others.

    + Assist with receiving, inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, materials, tools, and instrumentation, including hazardous material handling and waste disposal.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Associate's degree/trade certificate and 3 years of relevant experience in a professional manufacturing or prototyping environment or makerspace

    + Experience in the use and maintenance of 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC and manual machine tools, electronic test equipment, and soldering tools

    + Experience with FDM, SLA, and SLS printing techniques and materials. Experience with Polyjet, DLS, DMLS, and other advanced printing techniques and materials is desirable.

    + Experience with CAD/CAM software and CNC programming

    + Experience assembling and troubleshooting electrical circuits

     

    Work Schedule

     

    The position will be on-site M-F during regular business hours.

     

    We are open to an alternative schedule that includes evenings/weekends or 10-hour days (4 days per week).
