    About the Team

     

    The Health Care System (HCS) Quality & Organizational Excellence team leads enterprise-level improvement across ambulatory, hospital, and population health settings. We partner with clinical, operational, and analytics leaders to strengthen care delivery, advance equity, and achieve UNC Health’s** **_Forward Together 2030_** **goals.

     

    This position serves as a system-level improvement leader—combining strategy, data-driven execution, and mentorship to enable lasting, measurable results across diverse environments.

    Job Summary

    The HCS Business & Quality Improvement Leader provides quality and organizational excellence by leading cross-functional improvement initiatives throughout UNC Health.

     

    This role mentors improvement specialists and analysts, facilitates executive-level projects, and ensures alignment with system priorities.

     

    It requires strong leadership, analytic, and facilitation skills, along with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic Leadership & Collaboration

    + Lead complex, system-wide improvement initiatives that advance clinical quality, operational efficiency, and patient experience.

    + Partner with physicians, administrators, and interdisciplinary teams to align goals and resources.

    + Represent improvement initiatives on executive and steering committees.

    Quality Improvement & Data-Driven Problem Solving

    + Apply Lean Six Sigma and related methodologies to identify root causes and drive sustainable improvement.

    + Use analytics to quantify impact, monitor progress, and report measurable outcomes.

    + Coach leaders and teams in data interpretation and performance management.

    Coaching & Mentorship

    + Provide guidance and development for improvement specialists, analysts, and project managers.

    + Promote a culture of psychological safety, collaboration, and accountability.

    + Serve as a resource for departments implementing performance-improvement systems.

    Project & Program Management

    + Define project scope, objectives, and deliverables; manage cross-functional timelines and resources.

    + Maintain alignment with organizational strategy and regulatory requirements.

    + Communicate outcomes and lessons learned to senior leadership.

    Innovation & Systems Thinking

    + Identify opportunities to integrate technology, analytics, and process redesign.

    + Support scaling of successful pilots and sustainment of outcomes across entities.

    Education & Experience

    + Required: Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (Health Administration, Public Health, Nursing, Business, Analytics, Industrial Engineering, etc.).

    + Preferred: Master’s degree in Health Administration, Public Health, or Business.

    + Experience: Four (4) years of experience in quality facilitation, process improvement, or project management; or two (2) years if Master’s-prepared.

    + Preferred Certifications: Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, PMP, or CPHQ.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    + Demonstrated success leading cross-departmental improvement initiatives.

    + Strong analytical, facilitation, and presentation skills.

    + Advanced understanding of quality-improvement and change-management methodologies.

    + Proficiency with project management and data-visualization tools (Smartsheet, Power BI, Tableau, Minitab).
