Institutional Research Manager (HEA) - Biostatistician (Community Health and Social Medicine Department)
POSITION DETAILS
The CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY MED) is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CUNY MED graduated its first MD class in 2020. In addition, the CUNY MED offers a two-year Physician Assistant (PA) program to prepare health professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Our mission is 1) to provide access to medical education to talented youth from historically underrepresented in backgrounds in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under-served communities and 2) to perform innovative research in community health and biomedicine.
The Departments of Molecular, Cellular, and Biomedical Sciences (MCBS) and Community Health and Social Medicine (CHASM) play a critical role in our mission-driven BS/MD program and Physician Assistant program through their teaching and research programs. The MCBS department is responsible for the basic science curriculum. Faculty members conduct extramurally funded research currently centered on neuroscience, microbiology and immunology, cardiovascular disease, and oncology. The CHASM department curricular responsibilities include providing a comprehensive effort to educate our students in the social, economic, political and, behavioral determinants of health and disease, with a focus on population health, health disparities and health care policy. CHASM’s current research agenda is centered on chronic disease epidemiology, health behavior, health policy, health services and, community-based research.
We seek to hire a Biostatistician who will be part of either the Department of MCBS or CHASM, depending on their research discipline. The position will report to their departmental Chair and work collaboratively with CUNY MED instructional and research administration. The Biostatistician will support research, teaching, and community engagement initiatives by assisting faculty, students, early-stage investigators, and community-based organizations in designing, conducting, and translating research that promotes health equity in Harlem, the South Bronx, and surrounding communities.
In addition to the above details, the Biostatistician’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:
+ Lead and support the design and implementation of research studies, including formulating research questions, designing methodologies, collecting and managing data, analyzing results, and communicating findings through reports, scholarly manuscripts, and academic presentations.
+ Provide expert statistical and methodological consultation across the research lifecycle—advising on study design, data quality, analysis strategies, visualization tools, and dissemination practices.
+ Conduct complex quantitative analyses using statistical software such as R and Python on large-scale and diverse datasets, including NIH All of Us data, electronic health records, population surveys, geospatial and environmental data, and other national databases.
+ Integrate geo-coding, mapping, and spatial analysis techniques to assess the intersection of health outcomes with environmental, social, and community-level determinants.
+ Collaborate with faculty, early-career investigators, and community-based organizations to develop relevant and impactful research projects that promote equity and address public health priorities.
+ Design and deliver workshops and training sessions for faculty, students, and community partners on topics such as data analysis, interpretation, and applied research methods, supporting capacity-building and research literacy.
+ Contribute to scholarly and grant development efforts by co-authoring manuscripts, preparing grant proposals, and drafting internal and external reports.
+ Ensure research integrity and compliance, including the application of best practices in data management, reproducibility, privacy protection, and adherence to institutional, IRB, and regulatory guidelines.
+ Translate research into practice by developing actionable insights and recommendations that inform public health interventions, policy, and community initiatives.
+ Perform related duties as assigned by the Department Chairperson or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and six years' relevant experience required.
Preferred
+ Master’s or PhD in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Data Science, Public Health, or related field.
+ Demonstrated expertise in R and Python for statistical modeling, data visualization, and reproducible research.
+ Experience with All of Us Research Program data and other large-scale datasets (e.g., NHANES, BRFSS, SEER, CMS).
+ Proven ability in geo-coding, spatial analyses, and GIS mapping.
+ Excellent communication skills and ability to work with investigators and community partners.
+ Experience supporting early-stage investigators and community-based organizations in project design, analysis, and dissemination.
+ Demonstrated commitment to community health and engaged research.
+ Experience preparing data for publication, grant applications, and policy briefs.
+ Familiarity with cloud-based or secure data environments (e.g., FHIR and NIH Data Commons).
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

+ Develops relevant, timely and accurate institutional information to administrators, the college community, the external community, and external agencies.
+ Defines and implements research studies, designing and conducting data analyses and analyzing and interpreting results.
+ Researches, develops and recommends policy analyses relevant to anticipated institutional planning, policy, and decision-making needs.
+ Participates in college-wide strategic planning, institutional effectiveness and outcomes assessment tasks.
+ Respond to data, table and report requests from college constituencies.
+ Manage surveys, questionnaires and other data-gathering instruments administered by the Office.
+ Manages a library of institutional planning and research documents.
+ May consult with faculty and students in the design of databases for research projects
+ Performs related duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $74,249 - $129,041
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
