Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Surveyor Assistant / Construction Inspector. This hybrid role involves supporting field survey operations and performing civil construction inspections on infrastructure projects such as roads, streets, and underground utilities (including water lines, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems). Approximately 70% of the role will focus on surveyor assistant duties, while 30% will involve construction inspection tasks. This position requires prior experience or formal education in surveying or construction inspection—either through professional fieldwork or classroom-based training. The selected candidate will be expected to perform both surveying and inspection duties. Professional training will be provided to support advancement toward either a Crew Chief role or an experienced Civil Construction Inspector. The company will also cover the cost for the candidate to become INDOT-certified in construction inspection, and obtaining INDOT certification is an expected milestone for this role.
Responsibilities
+ Assist survey crew in conducting land, boundary, topographic, and construction surveys.
+ Set up and operate surveying instruments including total stations, GPS receivers, and levels.
+ Carry and transport equipment to and from job sites, sometimes over uneven terrain.
+ Record measurements and field notes accurately.
+ Mark survey points and assist in layout for construction staking.
+ Perform basic calculations and assist in interpreting site plans.
+ Maintain and perform routine checks on survey equipment.
+ Follow safety protocols and site procedures at all times.
+ Conduct field inspections of civil construction projects including roads, sidewalks, and underground utilities.
+ Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
+ Document daily construction activities, site conditions, and any deviations from plans.
+ Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, and project managers.
+ Assist in reviewing plans and specifications to prepare for inspections.
+ Report findings and recommendations in a timely and professional manner.
Essential Skills
+ Prior experience or formal education in surveying or construction inspection is required.
+ High school diploma or equivalent; coursework in geometry, trigonometry, or drafting is a plus.
+ Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
+ Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and walk long distances.
+ Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
+ Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
+ Good communication and teamwork skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, or similar tools is a plus.
+ Experience with Trimble GPS and topographic surveys.
+ Knowledge of INDOT standards and land surveying.
Work Environment
This is a field-based role with exposure to seasonal weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and wind. The position may involve hiking, climbing, and vegetation management such as chopping and cutting. Flexible work hours are dependent on project needs, and occasional travel may be required. This is a Permanent position based out of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $41600.00 - $62400.00/yr.
