The primary purpose of the Quality Assurance - Medical Supply Technician is to serve as the Quality Assurance specialist for all activities of Sterile Processing Services. The MST provides support to the SPS leadership team in all duties related to monitoring the processes of Sterile Processing Services. Responsibilities Major duties include but are not limited to: Evaluates the quality of work SPS staff, conducting clinical inspections, investigating the cause of deviations / shortfalls in the processing of RMD. Analyze inspection results, write and maintain reports dealing with the Quality Assurance program. Trains staff on inputting QA data and reviews SPS policies on reprocessing of RMD. Serves as a formal or informal preceptor and/or mentor to employees. This is a full performance position in Sterile Processing Services as a Quality Assurance Medical Supply Technician. In this position, the incumbent will perform segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, preparation and sterilization/high-level disinfection of RMD and other duties performed in Sterile Processing Services. Performs and documents daily, weekly and monthly operational checks. Maintains records of all processes and equipment in the department. The incumbent will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Device (RMD)as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for decontamination, preparation and sterilization/high-level disinfection of RMD appropriate to this position. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RMD appropriate to this position. Basic Requirements: US Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and/or Education Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable Specialized Experience: GS-07 Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Quality Assurance Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1) Knowledge of fact-finding and investigative techniques in order to evaluate work processes. 2) Ability to analyze data and make recommendations to correct quality control problems. 3) Knowledge of sterile processing operations, infection control procedures, and Joint Commission requirements to assess compliance during quality assurance reviews. 4) Ability to compile information, evaluate facts, document findings and prepare reports. 5) Thorough knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques to maintain quality control. 6) Ability to effectively communicate with technical and professional staff on the proper use of delicate instruments and equipment and resolve problems that may occur Preferred Experience: The incumbent will perform segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, preparation and sterilization/high-level disinfection of RMD and other duties performed in Sterile Processing Services. Performs and documents daily, weekly and monthly operational checks. Maintains records of all processes and equipment in the department. The employee is able to act as a preceptor to MSTs in developmental level positions. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
