Summary The position is located in the Wilmington VA Medical Center's Facilities Management Service under the supervision of the Maintenance & Operations Supervisor. The Electrician is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and the repair of the electrical/power systems of the entire facility. Responsibilities MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The incumbent is assigned a wide variety of duties of a journeyman electrician involving installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures and fire alarm systems. Pulls conductors through raceway systems, phase out and make connections. Under emergency conditions, may be required to splice high voltage (5KV) cables. Maintains and repairs all electrical equipment including transformers, feeders, motors, generators, starters, variable frequency drives, control systems, overload and over current protectors and controllers. The incumbent must be able to troubleshoot and maintain electric and electronic control circuits on various equipment including but not limited to, dietetic equipment, rotary files, electric beds, fire alarm systems, and tray conveyors at voltages ranging from low voltage control systems to 480V. Selects proper wire gauges, insulation, protective devices and switching for a variety of equipment, lighting and miscellaneous electrical loads. They also must be able to balance service loads over three phases. Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering, drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls that support industrial operations, computer complexes, or similar complex electrical loads. Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD02461A Physical Requirements: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic work platforms. Often works in portions of the electrical systems requiring attention that are in cramped, dirty, and hard to- reach locations. The work involves prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry over 50 pounds. A valid state driver's license is required for this position.
