    Summary This position is a Cardiovascular Technologist who has demonstrated advanced training in Interventional Cardiac Catheterization procedures; electrophysiology and mapping procedures; and procedures performed in a Hybrid OR Suite. Responsibilities The cardiovascular technologist performs invasive cardiovascular procedures utilizing highly complex and technical monitoring equipment under the direction or prescription of a qualified physician. These procedures are performed on patients who have diagnoses of congenital heart disease, congestive heart disease, acquired heart disease, and coronary artery disease. The technologist has training and certification in advanced life support and is competent to recognize life-threatening changes during procedures. The patient populations are at a high risk for cardiopulmonary arrest and the technologist must be competent to assist with the rescue during these events. They mentor and train lower graded technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiovascular technology students on invasive cardiology procedures and assist the supervisor/manager with quality control and performance improvement activities. The incumbent must be able to be on-call and fulfill the obligations of on-call status. The Cardiology Procedure Lab Technician executes responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to managing complex systems. Duties, roles, and responsibilities include: Assure all equipment is operational prior to patient procedures; contact Cath Lab Supervisor, Biomedical Repair, and the attending physician when equipment is inoperative or malfunctioning. Secure patient's confidence and cooperation during procedures. Explain the procedure, position for desired results, cushion, and shield patients for a variety of difficult procedures. Gather patient information from the electronic medical record. Operate cardiac physiologic monitoring equipment. Set up and calibrate pressure transducers. Properly identify, label, and sample intracardiac and vascular waveforms. Completely and accurately document all aspects of the procedure including capturing and inputting data or procedural calculations in the hemodynamic monitoring system. Facilitate insertion and manipulation of guidewires and catheters into vasculature under fluoroscopic guidance for diagnostic and interventional purposes. Obtain invasive hemodynamic data, cardiac output, and blood samples. Inject contrast manually or with the aid of a mechanical contrast device to visualize anatomical structures (angiography, venography, etc.). Operate single and bi-plane fluoroscopic equipment utilized in imaging. Manipulate imaging equipment to optimally define anatomy. Select magnification acquisition technique specific for procedure and anatomy and perform post processing of acquired images including quantitative analysis, digital subtraction, and image annotation. Set up and operate ancillary procedure equipment including the power injector, IVUS/OCT, ICE, FFR/CFR/IFR, Atherectomy / Thrombectomy Devices, Intra-aortic Balloon Pump, Percutaneous Ventricular Assist Devices, PACS image archive system, Hemodynamic system, EP Recording system, 3D non-invasive Mapping System in Electrophysiology procedures, as well as RF and Cryo Generator systems. Perform Activated Clotting Time (ACT), Whole Blood Oximetry, and Blood Glucose Monitoring quality control and patient testing using Point of Care equipment in the procedure labs. Follow CAP Survey Standards of the General Laboratory. Coordinate patient placement following procedure with bed control and involved unit to ensure patient needs are met. Perform personal care or nursing care activities that do not require professional nurse education or nursing licensure. Assist with patient care and operate specialty equipment during clinical emergencies (cardiac arrest, tamponade, hypotension / shock etc.). Evaluate new equipment and provide insight into new technology. Initiate or participate in quality or performance improvement projects. Provide training to colleagues, new employees, students, and trainees. Perform work in a setting which regularly and recurrently involves exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, radiation risks, and other risks that require special health and safety precautions such as gloves, protective clothing, and the use of radiation safety badges. Work Schedule: Full time-Monday-Friday 7:30-4:00 p.m., rotating 24/7 on call. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-9:Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of cardiac catheterization technician services. Preferred Experience: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable or a similar advanced certification. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are preferred for employees at this level. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, this is directly related to the duties of this position to be filled. A minimum of 5-7 years of experience as a Cardiovascular Technologist is recommended for this position. Physical Requirements: While performing duties of this job the Cardiac Catheterization Technician is frequently required to stand walk, bend and reach. May require long periods of standing and wearing of lead apron, gloves, mask, and gown and eye shields during diagnostic procedures. Must be able to lift and/or move over 50 pounds. They must have good manual dexterity and keyboarding skills. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word. Must be able to view and read information on computer screens.
