The Human Resilience Technology Group develops, adapts, and deploys advanced technologies to address the most significant challenges in disaster relief, global development, and community resilience. We extend rapidly evolving technical capabilities – such as remote sensing and signal processing techniques, robotics, data science, software tools, and systems analysis – to under-served mission needs across the domestic and international landscape. Recent program efforts have included:

+ Integrating advanced remote sensing and situational awareness technologies in large-scale disaster relief and recovery needs

+ Applying novel analytical methods – including artificial intelligence and machine learning – to longstanding humanitarian challenges, especially in sparse and challenging data environments

+ Creating software decision support and data visualization platforms for critical decision-making

    Position Description

The Human Resilience Technology Group is seeking a co-op student to support research programs in soft robotics for urban search and rescue.

We welcome applicants with backgrounds in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fields. This position will focus on the development of distributed sensor networks for soft, growing robots, with opportunities to work across the full stack of robotics research—from hardware and electronics fabrication to sensor processing and human-computer interaction. Students will also contribute to peer-reviewed academic publications.

Eligibility: Applicants should be current academic juniors or above. Graduate students are also encouraged to apply. This position requires comfort work in and around engineered rubble piles.

    Ideal candidates will have:

+ Familiarity with standard robotics software tools (ROS2, OpenCV, PyTorch)

+ Experience with innovation and transitioning systems from the laboratory to the field.

+ Comfort working in and around engineered rubble piles during testing.

+ Strong teamwork skills for collaboration on a multidisciplinary team.

+ The ability to identify technology needs, prototype solutions, and quantitatively evaluate performance.

    Compensation

Compensation for 2025 (will be reviewed for 2026)

+ Technical Co-Op: $24.50 – $31.00 per hour (based on year in school)

+ Administrative Co-Op: $21.50 – $25.00 per hour (based on year in school)

Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
