    Purpose of Classification

     

    The purpose of this classification is to perform semi-skilled general trades work associated with fabricate, install, replace, and repair of City streets, sidewalks, parks, equipment, buildings and related facilities. Assist with creation and maintenance of City signs.

    Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation:

    Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.

     

    Non-Essential Employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee’s Department Head will determine when the employee will be required to work.

    Essential Functions

    The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

     

    Fabricate traffic control signs in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration’s “Standard Highway Signs” using associated sign software and hardware.

     

    Install, repair and maintain traffic control signs and devices in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control (MUTCD)

     

    Fabricates specialty signs (non-traffic) for various city departments.

     

    Install traffic markings on roadways, including but not limited to lane lines, crosswalks, stop bars, turn arrows and parking lots

     

    Cleans and prepare surfaces for striping. Remove unwanted striping by grinding

     

    Produces signs using desktop computer and BREN sign making software; presses sign facia/backing to sign blanks using roller press; cuts letters for signs using letter cutter and printer; drills mounting holes in signs; attaches signs to poles.

     

    Makes specialty signs for various City departments by utilizing computer, cutter, printer and graphics software.

     

    Erects signs at appropriate sites, to include digging holes for sign posts, driving sign posts into ground, and cutting branches and roots around signs.

     

    Lays out and paints road markings such as center lines and parking lot stripes, using paint striper.

     

    Applies city logo decals and stripes to vehicles.

     

    Assists other division crews with laying sidewalks or other road/street maintenance projects.

     

    Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in sign production/installation or other department projects, which may include computer, a sign/step van, dump truck, asphalt compactor, letter cutter, roller press, paint striper, pressure washer, drill press, concrete/asphalt saw, jig saw, post hole digger, shovel, spade, pick axe, and mechanic tools.

     

    Performs various manual labor functions associated with sign production/installation or other department projects, which may include cleaning old signs, repairing/replacing damaged signs, driving sign posts into ground, removing signs from ground, bolting/affixing signs to sign posts, cutting shrubs/branches, digging holes, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, erecting traffic control barricades, or flagging traffic.

     

    Gathers necessary equipment, tools, parts, or supplies to conduct projects; initiates orders for new or replacement materials; transports, loads and unloads equipment and materials used in projects.

     

    Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.

     

    Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, work logs, pre-/post-trip vehicle checklists, or other documents.

     

    Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, work logs, maps, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

     

    Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.

     

    Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, city officials, law enforcement personnel, vendors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

     

    Maintains a current knowledge of regulations and guidelines pertaining to road sign specifications, such as sign size/color, placement height, visibility, and placement on right-of-ways.

    ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

    Conducts various errands as needed, which may include picking up supplies/materials.

     

    Provides assistance or coverage to other employees as needed.

     

    Performs other related duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + High school diploma or valid; supplemented by vocational/technical training in sign fabrication, road construction, or equipment operation;

    + One (1) year previous experience and/or training involving sign fabrication, road construction, or equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

    + Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.

    + Sunshine One Call Certification preferred.

    All full-time employees accrue time toward paid vacation leave. Accrual begins immediately and vacation may be taken after six months of employment.

    Sick Leave / Family Sick Leave

    Full-time employees accrue one day of sick leave per month. An employee may elect to use up to 5 days per year of accrued sick time for illness in his/her immediate family.
