Summary
The Business Analyst supports the Central Support & Predictive Intelligence (CS&PI) team within Marathon Petroleum’s Strategy & Business Development (S&BD) organization. This role partners closely with S&BD teams and other business units to deliver insights that clarify uncertainty, anticipate risks, and identify opportunities.
Analysts collect, analyze, and share intelligence to guide strategic decisions; ideally with initial emphasis on Natural Gas and NGLs value chains in support of the MPLX Portfolio Strategy team. The role requires monitoring external trends, competitive dynamics, and industry shifts, then translating findings into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders and senior leadership.
The position also provides support for S&BD processes, such as budget coordination, data room support, and process improvement initiatives. Candidates with interest or experience in technology, AI tools, and workflow automation are encouraged to apply.
*This position is part of a job progression with multiple career levels. The final title & grade will be determined based on the successful candidate’s overall experience & qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Intelligence & Strategy Support
+ Engage regularly with stakeholders to understand strategies, market disruptors, and emerging trends.
+ Prioritize and respond to intelligence requests from advisors and company leaders.
+ Research and validate information from multiple sources; monitor external developments to identify risks and opportunities.
+ Analyze financial, operational, and industry data to generate insights and recommend actions.
+ Prepare clear, professional reports, newsletters, and presentations for business and executive audiences.
Process & Technology Support
+ Provide support and feedback to help continuously improve CS&PI processes, including the Strategic Leading Indicators system and other AI tools.
+ Partner with BP&A and S&BD managers to support budget planning and tracking.
+ Manage data room processes for M&A and divestiture opportunities.
+ Monitor and communicate tariff filings that may affect MPC or MPLX operations.
+ Lead process improvement initiatives, including developing workflows in tools such as Power Automate.
+ Collaborate with IT to automate intelligence collection and improve data accessibility.
Project Support
+ Contribute to cross-functional projects and special initiatives within S&BD (e.g., scenario planning).
Qualifications & Skills:
+ Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
+ Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, even with incomplete or ambiguous information.
+ Comfortable synthesizing and summarizing large data sets.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
+ Knowledge or strong interest in:
+ Market data and outlooks
+ Industry participants and financial metrics
+ Refining value chains
+ Renewables and Emerging Technologies
+ Familiarity with technology tools is a plus:
+ AI-powered research tools
+ Workflow automation (e.g., Power Automate, Copilot)
+ Data visualization (e.g., PowerBI)
Education & Experience:
+ Required: Bachelor’s degree
+ Preferred fields: Business, Finance, Marketing, Supply Chain, Engineering, Information Technology, or related areas.
+ Experience: Preferred 5-7 years in a business, analytical, or technical role (ideally in Refining, Midstream/MPLX, Commercial, Finance, or IT).
