    Location:

    This role is **Hybrid out of Ferguson's corporate offices in Newport News VA,** in accordance with company policy. If out of our geography, please indicate on resume if you are currently moving or open to a move to the Hampton Roads area. This role is not approved for remote work.

    Responsibilities:

    + As a member of the Indirect Tax Team, assist with US and Canada indirect tax compliance including collaborating with Ferguson’s Big 4 accounting firm outsource compliance service partner to prepare, review, and file over 900 sales and use tax returns per month and over 1,500 business licenses annually, make any related payments, and respond to related notices from taxing authorities;

    + Manage state and local tax audits from start to finish, including but not limited to building effective working relationships with auditors and outside consultants, responding timely to information document requests, analyzing contested transactions and issues and effectively communicating the company’s position verbally and in writing, and assisting in drafting appeals or other formal or informal communications with tax authorities;

    + Teaming and troubleshooting with senior Ferguson headquarters staff and managers in 1,500+ North American branches on important day-to-day operational and customer service issues, including advising on the taxability of new and existing products and services, resolving customer taxability and exemption questions, resolving tax rate questions and disputes, consulting on pending contracts and bids, and generally supporting the business to operate more smoothly;

    + Apply exemption certificate management technologies and assist with their implementation and roll-out to users and stakeholders throughout the Ferguson business enterprise;

    + Assist in the implementation and ongoing maintenance of indirect tax SOX controls, including but not limited to account reconciliations, maintenance of tax rate changes, etc.

    + Assist as needed with special projects in the US, UK, and Canada;

    + Being a collaborative team member, including but not limited to identifying process improvements, proactively raising issues as they arise and offering solutions, sharing ideas, and lending a helping hand so that the team will operate more efficiently, optimally, and collegially.

    Qualifications:

    + Four-year degree (BS in Accounting would be a plus), preferred but not required, or relevant 1–3 years work experience.

    + Experience in public accounting and/or large corporate tax environment dealing with sales and use tax issues of 2-4 years.

    + Experience with tax accounting, researching sales and use tax issues, managing sales and use tax audits, and validating exemption certificates.

    + Proficiency with Excel, Alteryx, or other spreadsheet programs.

    + Experience with financial reporting systems, e.g., Oracle, etc.

    + Familiarity with tax engine software such as OneSource and Vertex.

    + Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

    + Ability to independently manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.

    + Strong written and verbal communication skills.

    + Demonstrated learning agility.
