Description of Work Unit
The Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology ( MIP ) Department is comprised of over 400 individuals who share a common passion for solving some of the most important human and animal health problems today. Research programs include those related to mycobacteria, retroviruses, prions, zoonotic and arthropod-borne infectious diseases, as well as the diagnostic investigation of naturally-occurring animal diseases. A leader in education, MIP provides the only microbiology undergraduate degree program in Colorado, a graduate program that provides training in a number of cutting-edge disciplines, and several specialized veterinary residency training programs.
Position Summary
A fully supported Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available in the Podell Research Laboratory, within the Mycobacteria Research Laboratories ( MRL ) at Colorado State University. This position will support the research objectives of thePodell Laboratory (https://labs.vetmedbiosci.colostate.edu/podell/) .
This position will focus on research investigating immune responses to novel candidate TB vaccines and immune pathology associated with tuberculosis using animal model systems, advanced immunology and pathology approaches, and computational data analysis. A key component of this post-doctoral project will be further optimization of a pre-existing, yet novel, aerosol system for the aerosol infection ofin vivomodels. The ideal candidate will also have strong evidence of a method development background. Previous experience working withM. tuberculosis(or similar) in a biosafety level 3 laboratory setting is required. Prior experience working within vivolaboratory models of infectious disease is also required. Experience with alternative animal models will be considered an added strength. The candidate should have strong leadership skills, with capacity to orchestrate research productivity across a collaborative research environment. Excellent organizational and communication skills are required.
This position aims to provide training in immunological mechanisms of vaccine-mediated protection through iterative method development, advanced computational pathology and immunology.
Required Job Qualifications
+ A PhD with related laboratory experience in Immunology, Pathology, Microbiology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, or similar field
+ Evidence of method development (i.e. development of entirely novel method, optimization of pre-existing method, re-purposing of pre-existing method) in PhD
+ Proficiency in MS Office, scientific data/graphics programs and biostatistics
+ A strong track record of publication for the post-doctoral career stage in a first/senior author role
+ Experience working with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (or similar) under Biosafety 3 (BSL3) conditions, and willingness to conform to additional training and performance criteria required by the CSU Biosafety Office.
+ Experience working with animal models of infectious disease and tissue-derived specimens from these animal models
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills in the English language
+ Demonstrated contributions in team-based science and leadership roles
+ Must be self-motivated, highly organized, and be able to work across a number of different projects simultaneously
Preferred Job Qualifications
+ Aerobiology expertise includingin vivoaerosol infection
+ including experience with R-based programming for large data sets
+ Microscopy techniques; digital pathology, EM, confocal microscopy; including optimized sample preparation.
+ Experience with preparing, viewing, and interpreting histopathology from animal models of tuberculosis.
+ Performance of pathology-based immunological methods, such as immunohistochemistry or direct immunofluorescence.
+ Experience with transcriptional measures such as scRNAseq and spatial transcriptomics.
