    The Environmental Services Division of Met Council is accepting applications for one (1) full-time Engineer or Associate Engineer or Environmental Scientist (depending on qualifications) positions in the Industrial Waste & Pollution Prevention (IWPP) Section within the Operations and Support Services Department.

     

    This position is eligible for a hybrid telework arrangement (remote work for up to 2 days a week). The telework location must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin. The position requires occasional travel and working out of various locations throughout the seven (7) county Metropolitan Area. Some work sites are not accessible by public transportation; so, driving a Council vehicle within the metro area may be required.

    How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

    With a vision of clean water for future generations, the Engineer or Associate Engineer or Environmental Scientistwill work with IWPP to protect the Met Council water resource recovery facilities, the collection system, public health and safety, and the environmental health of the Twin Cities area by monitoring and regulating users of the Metropolitan Disposal System (public sanitary sewers), ensuring compliance, and supporting continuous improvement in industrial wastewater management.

     

    What you would do in this job

     

    + Issue and administer industrial discharge permits and evaluate all permittee submittals.

    + Inspect industrial users and prepare detailed inspection reports and checklists.

    + Plan, coordinate, and evaluate field monitoring projects at industrial user facilities. Prepare accurate and timely monitoring project reports.

    + Carry out functions related to Met Council revenue programs, including the timely review of permittee self-monitoring reports.

    + Respond to special discharge requests, spills, and other issues related to both internal (other Met Council departments and sections) and external (cities/communities, industrial users, etc.) customers.

    + Follow our Enforcement Response Plan and Guidelines, and enforce applicable federal, state, and local pretreatment regulations.

    + Collaboratively work on teams, as assigned.

    + Complete special projects, as assigned.

    + Complete other related duties/tasks, as assigned.

    + Utilize and strengthen the following competencies: customer focus, optimizing work processes, collaboration, being action oriented, communicating effectively, being resilient, instilling trust, valuing differences, and cultivating innovation.

    + Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or in a directly related area of discipline.

    + Bachelor's degree in Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering or in a directly related engineering disciplineAND

    + Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of hire. *Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam.

     

    Minimum Qualifications forEngineer

     

    + Bachelor's degree in Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering or in a directly related engineering disciplineAND

    + At least two (2) years of related engineering experienceAND at least two (2) years of related engineering experienceANDsuccessful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of hire. Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam.

    What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

    + Experience with or knowledge in industrial pretreatment programs, industrial discharge permits, basic industrial wastewater pretreatment processes, and wastewater treatment plant processes.

    + Experience with rules and regulations (preferably within an industrial pretreatment program).

    + Experience in customer service.

    + Experience and skilled in working collaboratively on teams and independently with little direction.

    + Experience in building relationships and trust with others.

    + Ability to conduct inspections and field monitoring in industrial settings or at other Metropolitan Disposal System (public sanitary sewers) sites which may include exposure to moving parts, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, vibration, climbing and confined space entry.

    + Ability to work collaboratively on teams and independently with minimal direction.

    What your work environment would be:

    Work is generally performed in a standard office setting. Work may require travel between primary work site to other sites. Environment may be hot, cold, dirty and/or dusty. Occasionally work may be required on evenings and weekends.
