Occupational Medicine Physician – Montgomery County Government Disability Review Panel Member
Employment Type: Part-Time / Contract / Appointment/Remote
This role typically requires a time commitment of approximately 10 hours per week (or 40 hours per month).
Introduction
Montgomery County Government has an immediate need for experienced physicians licensed to practice medicine in Maryland to serve on the County’s Disability Review Panel. This prestigious panel plays a critical role in evaluating disability claims and ensuring fair, impartial medical recommendations for County employees and retirees. If you are a licensed physician with at least ten years of experience and board-certified in Occupational Medicine and are committed to public service, we invite you to apply.
Key Responsibilities
+ Review medical records and occupational information related to disability benefit applications and re-evaluations under the Employees' Retirement System (ERS), Retirement Savings Plan (RSP), and Guaranteed Retirement Income Plan (GRIP).
+ Evaluate eligibility for service-connected, non-service-connected, temporary, or permanent disability benefits, including exemptions from re-employment programs.
+ Collaborate with fellow panel members to reach consensus on eligibility for service-connected or non-service-connected disability benefits, determination of partial or total disability, continuation or termination of temporary or permanent disability benefits, and exemption from re-employment programs for disability retirees.
+ Recommend diagnostic tests and independent medical examinations when necessary.
+ Reassess and opine on ongoing disability cases to confirm continuation, modification, or termination of benefits.
+ Submit written recommendations to the Chief Administrative Officer regarding disability determinations.
Required Qualifications
+ Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from an AMA-accredited medical school.
+ Active license to practice medicine in the State of Maryland.
+ Board certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine or certification in another relevant specialty with at least 10 years of experience practicing occupational medicine.
+ Extensive clinical expertise in evaluating cases that include orthopedics, pulmonary, and neurological conditions.
+ Skilled in conducting and reviewing disability examinations.
+ Strong ability to interpret medical tests, imaging, and functional evaluations.
+ Knowledgeable in HIPAA-compliant documentation and producing defensible medical reports.
+ Experienced with diagnostic tools, EMRs, and document management systems.
+ Proficient in MS Office and MS Teams.
Preferred Attributes
+ Prior experience in disability evaluation or public sector medical review.
+ Familiarity with retirement and disability benefit systems.
+ Commitment to impartiality and ethical medical judgment.
Additional Opportunity Details
This part-time opportunity requires participation in quarterly virtual meetings with Disability Review Panel members and the ability to review applications and medical documentation to determine eligibility for disability retirement benefits pursuant to County law. Panel Members are expected to prepare reports and testify, as needed, before the Disability Arbitration Board. Terms of service may renew every 3 years.
