PeaceHealth is seeking a Surgical Services Assistant - Short Stay Unit for a Per Diem/Relief, 0.00 FTE, Day (variable shift) position. The salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is $23.16 – $31.72. The hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement, seniority, etc.
This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement. There may be more than one opening on this posting.
Job Summary
Function as part of the surgical services patient care team. Provide assistance to nursing staff and physicians for patient care while in the Surgical/Pre-Op area.
Essential Functions
+ Provide direct patient care to include observing patient's physical, psychological, social and cultural needs. Provide care appropriate to patient's age recognizing specific physical, safety, nutrition/elimination, motor/cognitive and psychosocial needs. Provide patient care under the direct supervision of the RN/MD. Provide phlebotomy services as directed. Take vital signs, glucoscans, pulse oximeters and thermo scans. Acquire lab specimens. Measure and apply SCD's and TED's (devices to prevent blood clotting or compression device). Perform pre-surgical shaves/preps.
+ Perform environment of care duties to include the provision of patient transport as indicated. Demonstrate procedures and techniques to prevent the spread of micro-organisms. Demonstrate the ability to identify and implement safety/emergency procedures. Organize/maintain department stock levels and order special order items as assigned.
+ Document care delivered as appropriate according to standards. Input patients' information, order tests, STAT lab results, History and Physicals (H&P’s) into computer.
+ Demonstrate behavior which maintains and respects the patient’s rights and independence, regardless of race, religion, life-style, sexual preference or disease process.
+ Effectively communicate clinical information by communicating abnormal patient findings and/or concerns with RN/MD. Anticipate patient needs and communicate with RN/MD. Utilize recognized organization communication standard via appropriate communication channels. Is consistently courteous in all interactions and acts as communication link for staff. Keep abreast of and comply with departmental and organizational changes and events through reading posted communications and attending unit and assigned meetings.
+ Perform general duties to include actively participating in performance improvement initiatives. Demonstrate knowledge of hospital, interdepartmental and unit goals, standards and operations. Maintain and update knowledge of and is responsive to laws and regulations which affect his/her practice.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
+ Accredited Program Required: Nursing Assistant Up to 12 months training after high school as nursing assistant or graduation from a medical assistant program (AAMA accredited preferred) And
+ Accredited Program Required: Phlebotomy
Experience
+ Required: Minimum six months as CNA in acute care setting that included phlebotomy or 0-6 months of hospital or clinic experience as Medical Assistant (or equivalent combination of education and/or experience).
Credentials
+ Required: Certified Nurse Assistant - Washington or
+ Required: WA State MA Certification/Registration and
+ Required: within 90 Days Medical Assistant Phlebotomist - Washington if CNA and
+ Required: Upon Hire Basic Life Support

+ Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills. (Required)

+ Ability to act quickly in emergency situation. (Required)
+ Technical skills related to drawing blood samples and tasks listed under responsibilities section. (Required)
+ Knowledge of specimen handling practices. (Required)
+ Computer skills with ability to navigate multiple software sites simultaneously. (Required)
+ Ability to work in a fast-paced environment independently or as part of a team. (Required)
Working Conditions
Lifting
+ Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
+ Ability to move around area with occasional sitting.
+ Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment (i.e. stretchers, wheelchairs, etc.).
+ Frequent reaching/ grasping.
+ Occasional bending/ stooping.
+ Push/Pull: Frequently up to 25 lbs. force. Occasional up to 50 lbs. force.
Environmental Conditions
+ Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
+ Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
+ Time spent on site in medical/hospital setting.
Mental/Visual
+ Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
+ Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
