Introduction
IBM Quantum is seeking talented engineers to join the quantum hardware design/simulation team at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. The team focuses on delivering quantum processor and processor-adjacent designs to meet a variety of internal needs, and develops and drives the methodology to make these designs successful. Design scopes span from exploratory research to production-roadmap quantum processor unit development.
Your role and responsibilities
The successful candidate will join the quantum EDA effort at IBM Quantum and participate in development of the cutting-edge tools being used for designing quantum processor and testsite modules targeting IBM's proprietary superconducting technology. Applicants are expected to have experience with software engineering and be fluent in Python, and have had experience with industry-standard CMOS design tools (e.g, digital RTL-to-GDS flows, analog/mixed-signal design automation, microwave EDA for RFICs) and/or quantum hardware design automation. Experience with microwave engineering and the OpenAccess API is strongly preferred. Because the role includes collaboration between several diverse and dynamic teams of technical and operations personnel, good communication skills, initiative, and a strong sense of responsibility are key.
Responsibilities include:
* Algorithm development for automation of quantum hardware design tasks, including but not limited to: microwave design optimization, automated constraint-driven placement, automated waveguide routing, Hamiltonian simulation etc.
* EDA tool ownership and development within a modern software engineering framework
* Collaboration with chip design teams and process integration to drive new tool requirements
* Driving broad EDA strategy evolution for quantum hardware design
Required technical and professional expertise
* Python
* Linux (high familiarity)
* Software development (version control, CI/CD)
* CMOS design tooling (e.g, Cadence Virtuoso/Innovus, Synopsys Custom Compiler/Fusion Compiler/IC Compiler II/Design Computer, Keysight PathWave ADS)
Preferred technical and professional experience
* Ansys EDT/HFSS
* Rust
* Microwave engineering
* OpenAccess API experience
