    Detailed Description:

    Job Summary Provide support to the ionizing and non-ionizing radiation programs at Johnson Space Center (JSC), Sonny Carter Training Facility (SCTF), Ellington Field (EFD), White Sands Test Facility (WSTF), and El Paso Forward Operating Location (EFOL). The ionizing radiation programs include radioactive materials, medical and industrial x-rays, and radioactive waste activities while the non-ionizing radiation programs include lasers, microwaves, radiofrequency sources, ultraviolet, and infrared exposure activities. Perform duties including: compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) rules and regulations and the review, analysis, evaluation, and monitoring of ionizing and non-ionizing sources currently in use or proposed for research, development, test, and evaluation activities. Provides advisory services, technical reviews and training to customers in regards to the safe use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources and on matters related to applicable federal and/or state regulations. Perform duties authorized by the JSC Radiation Safety Officer. Maintain the radiation dosimetry database. Maintain inventory databases for radioactive materials, radiation producing machines, radioactive waste, lasers, and radiofrequency radiation transmitters and receivers. Conduct testing of sealed radioactive material sources, as required. Responsibilities • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel. • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company • Responsible for completing all assigned training • Perform routine surveys and evaluations of current and proposed uses of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources. • Respond to requested health physics support of spacecraft launch and landing sites. • Perform update and exchange of personal dosimetry devices and records. • Maintain radiation source inventories. • Conduct leak testing on sealed radioactive material sources • Evaluate radiation users exposures. • Support the JSC Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) and the JSC Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) • Maintain Nuclear Regulatory Rules and Regulations. • Document transfer and receipt of radioactive material to/from JSC and its approved radioactive material worksites and to/from other NRC and state licensed entities. • Document the transfer and receipt of radioactive waste • Provide advice and training on radiological health and radiation safety matters. • Attend meetings with managers, supervisors, engineers and workers • Organize and provide emergency response and stand-by support Position Requirements:

     

    Education/Experience 1. Required: a. Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in health physics, medical physics, physics, nuclear engineering, industrial hygiene, safety, or a closely related physical science. b. 40 or more hours formal training in radiation safety and health physics c. 0-5 years experience in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of ionizing radiation safety and health hazards. 2. Desired: a. Advanced degree in health physics or medical physics b. Certified Health Physicist c. Approved user on a NRC or State Agreement Broadscope Radioactive Materials License. d. Approved Radiation Safety Officer on a NRC or State Agreement Broadscope radioactive Materials License e. Certified Laser Safety Officer f. Training in the evaluation and control of radiofrequency radiation hazards  Skills/Training 1. Required: a. Working knowledge of the hazards and safe use of radioactive materials and x-ray equipment. b. Knowledgeable about computers and the use of Microsoft Office products: Word and Excel c. Knowledgeable on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations and standards on ionizing radiation d. Ability to effectively communicate with people at all organizational levels e. Ability to work with people of varied backgrounds, education, and skill sets f. Possess a valid driver’s license 2. Desired: a. Working knowledge of the hazards and safe use of lasers and other non-ionizing radiation sources b. Knowledgeable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) non-ionizing radiation c. Knowledgeable on American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) exposure guidelines relating to non-ionizing radiation.
