    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, the lead fleet mechanic will provide safe, reliable and clean vehicles for Tribal government and employees to utilize. The fleet mechanic will be responsible for maintaining vehicles as required in a safe and efficient way.

    MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    + Able to diagnose and repair components of MIT Fleet Vehicles.

    + Masters troubleshooting skills, by combining personal experience with knowledge of Electronic Control Module diagnostic programming.

    + Thoroughly performs Preventative Maintenance inspections and services

    + Repairs and adjusts brake system.

    + Repairs, adjusts, and aligns suspension system.

    + Performs collision and body repair service.

    + Maintains tire pressure, and wheel balancing program.

    + Able to test, diagnose, and occasionally repair electrical issues.

    + Assists in meeting on time Preventative Maintenance goals.

    + Maintains superior internal and external customer relations, consistent with company policies.

    + Receives constructive criticism and praise in a business-like fashion and maintains a professional, positive attitude.

    + Assists in the training, development and evaluation of maintenance personnel work performance.

    + Ensures maintenance facility conforms to prescribed standards of safety and

    + Is knowledgeable and applies company safety practices including: DOT, EPA, ICC and OSHA rules and regulations. Ensures maintenance personnel are compliant with safety rules and regulations.

    + Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

    EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Required :

    Graduation from a high school or equivalent, and one (1) + years of mechanic experience on light and heavy equipment.

    Preferred :

    Class B Automotive/Mechanical Trade or Vocational certification. One year of diesel experience. Journeyman mechanic experience preferred.

    Special Requirements and Certification :

    + ASE Certification

    + Graduation/Certification from accredited vocational or technical college

    + Familiarity with DOT regulations and DOT inspections

     

    Incumbents must pass a criminal background check, a drug screen and meet all health and immunization requirements required by federal, state or Tribal laws and regulations. A first aid/CPR and blood borne pathogen certification may be required for some positions at time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.

    SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

    + Must have thorough knowledge and experience with but not limited to: hydraulic systems, gas engines, diesel engines, electrical systems, drive trains and various hand tools.

    + Must have basic typing and writing skills.

    + Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

    + Must have the knowledge and ability to prioritize job tasks.

    + Must be able to work independently.

    + Must pursue personal development opportunities and is committed to staying current within field of work.

    + Must support teamwork by participating, cooperating, and communicating with co-workers.

    + Must be able to effectively communicate with customers and co-workers by providing accurate, meaningful, courteous and timely responses to their questions or concerns.

    + Ability to understand, initiate, and follow tasks to completion.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and drive, talk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
