This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service Examination process for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Under general supervision in the Design and Construction Division - Civil Engineering Section, the Engineering Associate I performs difficult technical engineering work in the preparation of civil (including structural and transportation) engineering drawings and other graphic material using computer-aided design and drafting software products and working accurately and in compliance with SFO's drafting standards.
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified above are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
The essential functions of this position include:
+ Prepares civil (including structural and/or transportation) engineering drawings and other graphic material using AutoCAD, Map 3D, Civil 3D and/or Revit, in compliance with civil engineering drafting standards.
+ Researches and reviews record drawings to obtain as-built information and conducts engineering investigations; collects and calculates field/departmental data in the preparation of designs and drawings.
+ Checks and reviews engineering documents and drafting work of other staff for accuracy, engineering sufficiency, and conformance to specifications and standards.
+ Updates and maintains engineering documents and drawing records
+ Conducts site investigations with engineers of existing facilities to determine and verify site layout.
+ Identifies, develops, and enforces CAD and/or BIM drafting procedures and standards.
+ Reviews drawing submittals from utility agencies or other City departments and utilizes the information submitted in the preparation of construction drawings.
+ Coordinate with drafters from other disciplines to maintain project drafting consistency.
+ Updates Geographic Information System or drawing milestone database at various stages of a project.
+ Incorporates data from topographical surveys to prepare drawings.
+ Performs related duties as required.
1. Experience: Four (4) years of verified civil (including structural /or transportation), or electrical, or mechanical technical engineering drafting experience using CAD or BIM systems to prepare engineering drawings and other engineering graphic material, at least two (2) years of which must have been in a position with duties comparable to those of Class 5362 Engineering Assistant (https://careers.sf.gov/classifications/?classCode=5362) ;
2. License: Possession of a valid California driver license.
Substitution:
+ Additional education with major coursework in Computer Aided Design and Drafting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one (1) year; OR
+ Possession of a current and valid Autodesk Certified Professional & Expert certificate may be substituted for the two (2) of the four (4) years of verified technical engineering drafting experience above.
Special Condition: Civil Engineering Drafting (4 years)
The above minimum qualifications reflect special conditions associated with the position(s) to be filled. They may differ from the standard minimum qualifications associated with this class code.
Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
+ Work experience in developing contract plans, specifications, quantity and cost estimates on large-scale projects.
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedure:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process.
The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements and the special condition. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
Customs Clearance:
This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 19, Part 122, Sections 181 or 189.
