Job Summary
The Machine Shop Manager sets up, operates, and maintains conventional, CNC, and special-purpose machining equipment to fabricate metallic and non-metallic parts with high precision tolerances. This role interprets blueprints, CAD drawings, sketches, and specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, and sequence of operations, while also coordinating machine shop activities to support internal and external customer needs. The position is for the Ocean Enterprise division located in Gulfport, MS.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
+ Set up and operate equipment, including CNC and conventional machines, to develop, modify, and test machined part prototypes.
+ Interpret drawings, blueprints, CAD models, and specifications to ensure accuracy in fabrication.
+ Apply advanced shop mathematics to practical problems, including computing dimensions, layout work, and machine tool setup.
+ Manage machine shop activities by preparing quotations, scheduling projects, completing work orders, and billing internal and external customers.
+ Oversee and maintain raw material inventory, spare parts, and supplies to support production needs.
+ Perform non-routine maintenance, repair, lubrication, and cleaning of machine tools, equipment, and related mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
+ Develop and enforce shop practices and rules of engagement to ensure safety, equipment care, and property control.
Minimum Qualifications
An Associate’s degree (A.A.) from a two-year technical college, or five (5) years of related experience, is required. Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years of CNC programming experience on a 3-axis milling machine, along with at least five (5) years of experience working in a manufacturing environment with an emphasis on CNC operations, lathes, and mills. In addition, applicants must demonstrate five (5) or more years of prior experience in a metalworking manufacturing setting that operates under a structured quality system. The ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) to enter a secure port facility is also required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
+ Excellent verbal communication and written presentation skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
+ Able to make independent, technical, and tactical decisions with a high attentiveness to detail.
+ Strong computer skills and experience in utilizing software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Office, and Outlook.
+ Skill in operating a CNC milling machine in 3-axis and adhere to strict
tolerances of +/-0.003 or better on work pieces.
+ Skill in AutoCAD, Solid Works, or equivalent and 3-axis CAM.
+ Skill in making fixtures and holding devices for CNC milling machines and lathes.
+ Knowledge of precision measuring instruments and their application. Instruments include, but not limited to, calipers, inner and outer diameter micrometers, depth gauges, indicators, and height gauges.
+ Ability to train and operate various forklifts.
+ Ability to complete OSHA training to operate a 35-ton rough terrain crane.
+ Ability to participate in all-hands-on-deck hurricane evacuation and building preparations.
Preferred Qualifications
Ten (10) or more years of experience in a manufacturing or related environment with a strong emphasis on CNC operations, lathes, mills, and sheet metal fabrication is highly preferred. Additional experience with 5-axis milling machines, as well as a recognized certificate in Machine Technology, is desirable. Candidates with hands-on expertise in machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and composites manufacturing will be given strong consideration.
