General Description
CUNY Citizenship Now! the largest university-based legal assistance program in the nation, provides free and confidential immigration law services. Our model of legal services brings immigration assistance to New York City’s neighborhoods and is rooted in the belief that immigrants should be empowered to advocate on their own behalf – a model of legal services called pro se – “on behalf of themselves.”
Under the supervision of the Special Programs and Senior Events Manager, the Community Outreach Coordinator will play a key role in connecting CN! with government agencies and local community-based organizations to provide immigrants of New York City with information about CN!'s services. The coordinator will lead community outreach, facilitate event requests from external organizations, and conduct information sessions about CN! services to increase CN!’s visibility within the community.
The Community Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for engaging with the public – regardless of their eligibility for immigration relief - connecting them with CN! and/or other essential city resources to provide holistic care. This role requires general knowledge of immigration law, expertise in delivering presentations, along with strong research, scheduling, and organizational skills.
Other Duties
+ Triage and coordinate requests for CN! to participate in CUNY Campus events and external community events, including assigning legal staff to deliver legal information sessions
+ Represent CN! at City Council Member sponsored events to promote legal immigration services provided at over 40 council offices across New York City
+ Conduct outreach activities, such as flyering within the community, to share information about CN! services
+ Track all outreach activities, workshop attendance, and referrals using required forms and databases; monitor progress toward goals
+ Participate in staff meetings and trainings to enhance knowledge of CN! services, immigration law and other professional development
+ Maintain a comprehensive understanding of internal and external resources available to immigrants
+ Create and manage an active calendar of conducting outreach activities, including community events such as tablings, information sessions, workshops, and community meetings throughout the five boroughs of New York City
+ Deliver PowerPoint presentations (in-person and virtually) within the community to educate audiences about CN! services and other informational, nonlegal topics
+ Build relationships with community-based organizations (CBOs), schools, faith-based organizations, elected officials, local government agencies to expand CN! outreach to immigrants who may qualify for an immigration benefit
+ Build and maintain a database of CBOs and other agencies to improve outreach efforts and assist immigrants by connecting them with referral services and providing information on available resources
+ Ensure timely delivery of reports detailing all outreach initiatives and outcomes
+ Participate in CN!'s monthly Saturday citizenship application events
+ Participate in event preparation activities and duties to ensure the efficiency of the Unit. If needed, assist with printing, packing materials, supplies and documents for events
+ Assist with other administrative tasks, as needed
Qualifications
+ Bachelor's Degree
+ Public speaking and training experience required
+ Experience working with immigrant communities or on immigration issues is highly preferred
+ Familiarity with essential city resources and the processes for obtaining them
+ Strong commitment to protecting the rights of low-income, vulnerable immigrants
+ Ability to handle and resolve recurring problems in a courteous and professional manner
+ Excellent writing, interpersonal, computer, and scheduling skills
+ Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision
+ Detail-oriented, highly flexible, and self-motivated
+ Fluency in a second language (Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole preferred)
+ Excellent research and analytical skills
+ Strong organizational skills
+ Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, and demonstrate attention to detail
+ Excellent customer service skills
+ Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Reader, Formstack, Microsoft Suite
+ Work well under pressure, monitor due dates, and prioritize tasks by order of importance
+ Ability to travel throughout NYC and to work evenings and weekends as needed
