    The Georgia Department of Corrections seeks to fill a (2) vacancies for an attorney in the Office of Legal Services (Legal Services). Legal Services assists the Commissioner and staff with transactional legal issues that arise in the operation of the State’s prison system. Areas of practice include contracts, employment law, constitutional law and civil rights, administrative law, and healthcare. Legal Services also liaises with the Attorney General’s Office on pending litigation against the agency and GDC employees, and we handle all requests for access to public documents under the Open Records Act.

     

    This position may be filled as an Attorney 1 (anticipated starting salary of $65,000.00 with recent Bar admission and $60,000.00 pending Bar admission), Attorney 2 ($75,000.00), Attorney 3 ($85,000.00) depending upon the applicant’s credentials. Preference will be given to applicants who already are members in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR reciprocity (must obtain Law License).

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Experience working in a law office representing a governmental entity.

    2. Experience dealing with requests for documents under the Open Records Act.

    3. Experience working in a correctional or law enforcement setting.

    4. Experience reviewing and/or responding to pleadings, subpoenas, and similar documents.

    5. Employment law experience.

    6. Civil rights law experience; and

    7. Experience providing instruction to adults in a classroom setting.

Our practice is fast-paced, unique in the breadth of legal issues to which our team is exposed and provides a meaningful opportunity to impact Georgia’s criminal justice system.

     

    Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity (must obtain Law License). Note: Some positions may not allow the eligibility clause
