Annual Pay Range:$65,000 – $70,000 Job Summary:
The Associate Director of Transportation / Mechanic supports the Director of Operations in overseeing all aspects of the Fairfield Community School District’s transportation system. This includes supervision and execution of maintenance, repair, safety, and routing of the district’s vehicle fleet. This salaried position plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of district transportation services and vehicle upkeep.
Qualifications:
Required:
+ High School diploma or equivalent
+ Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake, passenger, and “S” endorsements (or willingness to obtain)
+ Working knowledge of mechanical components, diesel engines, air brake systems, and vehicle maintenance
+ Ability to meet deadlines and lift heavy objects
+ Successful completion of a DOT physical (as required by Iowa law)
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills
+ Basic computer skills (recordkeeping, maintenance tracking)
Desired:
+ Experience managing or coordinating vehicle maintenance or transportation operations in a school or public sector setting
+ Welding and fabrication experience
+ Knowledge of fleet inventory systems and preventative maintenance scheduling
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Associate Director of Transportation / Mechanic will:
Transportation Operations:
+ Assist in the overall supervision and coordination of district transportation systems
+ Provide routing support and coverage planning for daily and special route needs
+ Serve as a substitute bus driver as needed
+ Be on-call for transportation issues while buses are on the road, including after-hours and weekends
+ Assist with compliance to state and federal laws, board policies, and safety regulations
Fleet Maintenance and Supervision:
+ Lead and execute preventative maintenance programs for all district vehicles
+ Oversee service intervals, inspections, repairs, and upkeep of buses and other district vehicles
+ Diagnose and perform major mechanical repairs including engine, transmission, and brake work
+ Maintain detailed service records, track parts usage, and forecast future maintenance needs
+ Monitor inventory and order supplies/parts with approval from the Director of Operations or Head Mechanic
+ Ensure all vehicles meet operational and safety standards
+ Assist with summer vehicle maintenance and readiness programs
Facilities and Departmental Support:
+ Maintain cleanliness and safety of the bus garage
+ Provide maintenance support on other district equipment as assigned
+ Collaborate with district maintenance teams to support operations when needed
+ Represent the department positively with staff, students, families, and the community
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
This role requires:
+ Frequent standing, walking, climbing, reaching, pushing/pulling
+ Lifting up to 100 pounds
+ Working in indoor/outdoor environments, including in extreme weather conditions
+ Operating and driving district vehicles
Terms of Employment:
+ Annual Salary:$65,000 – $70,000 (dependent on experience and qualifications)
+ Work Schedule:
+ School Year:7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with 1-hour lunch (subject to assignment)
+ Summer:6:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday–Thursday, with 30-minute lunch
+ Final salary, hours, and work year to be established by the Superintendent with Board of Education approvalEvaluation:
