Description
The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Marine Molecular Ecology to conduct innovative research on ecosystem biodiversity and functionality at any trophic levels (microbial to megafauna) and organizational levels (individual to ecosystem). Understanding, predicting, and managing the responses of marine ecosystems, including living resources, to diverse anthropogenic impacts are fundamental challenges of our times. We seek to recruit a researcher who leverages genomic approaches to address these challenges. The successful candidate is expected to establish an active research program using advanced genomic, molecular, and bioinformatic tools that is complementary to existing SoMAS marine science, oceanographic and ecological expertise, and will be an effective teacher in undergraduate and graduate courses.
Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, adaptation genomics, comparative genomics, and/or functional genomics/-omics in the context of:
• ocean warming • eutrophication processes • collapsing fisheries • marine diseases • ocean acidification • climate-related movement of marine populations • contaminants • ocean deoxygenation • impact of changing ecosystem properties on species, community and system resilience • ecosystem connectivity •offshore wind energy development
Researchers at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level are particularly encouraged to apply, and should demonstrate clear potential to establish an internationally recognized, externally funded research program. Applicants at Associate Professor level must demonstrate a strong track record of external funding.
**Description of Duties:** The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic community at SoMAS and will have the opportunity to contribute to Stony Brook University's strategic priority of addressing climate research and solutions. SoMAS is a multi-disciplinary environment providing access to state-of-the-art research facilities and with opportunities for collaboration in interdisciplinary teams to address complex marine and climate change issues within the School. Excellent potential for collaboration exists with the Department of Ecology and Evolution, Institute for Advanced Computational Science, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/bnl/) , the New York State Center for Clean Water Technology, and the NY Climate Exchange (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/the-exchange/) . The successful candidate will commit to departmental and university service.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in marine ecology, biological oceanography, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or closely related disciplines in hand by August 31, 2026. Evidence of research activity relevant to the subject of the search as demonstrated by peer reviewed publications.
**Preferred Qualifications** :
Demonstrated ability to pursue and secure external funding from agencies, such as NSF, NOAA, Sea Grant, DOE, and other sources in order to sustain an independent externally funded research program that contributes to understanding environmental drivers of variability in marine biodiversity and functionality and supports graduate students. High quality research and publications relevant to the subject of the search. Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as mentoring students. Demonstrated commitment to creating a respectful and collaborative laboratory environment and supporting institutional efforts that strengthen excellence, accountability, and broad participation.
