    Office of Teaching & Learning - K-12 Literacy

    Job Focus Area

    At the Louisiana Department of Education’s Office of Teaching and Learning, our vision is for all students to have improved outcomes through high-quality instruction and interactions by an effective teacher supported by leaders and families. In the Division of Literacy, we achieve this by supporting local educators with the implementation of high-quality curricular materials, standards, and best practices. This position is dedicated to strengthening literacy outcomes across Louisiana by providing direct support to instructional leaders through the state’s Literacy Coaching Program. The program includes approximately 150 school-based literacy coaches and more than 20 regional literacy specialists who, in turn, support those coaches.

     

    The selected candidate will play a critical role in implementing evidence-based literacy strategies, delivering high-quality professional development, and offering technical assistance to educators statewide. Experience in middle and high school literacy is a plus. The duties include:60%implementation of Birth–12 literacy strategy programs, ensuring alignment with state priorities and best practices,30% technical assistance and professional development to support literacy coaches, regional specialists, and instructional leaders; and 10%other duties and special projects that advance statewide literacy initiatives.

    Candidates with the following skills, abilities, and experience are encouraged to apply:

    + Previous instructional or leadership coaching experience

    + Experience in middle and high school literacy

    + Strong oral and written communication skills as well as effective organizational skills, maximizing the use of technology, and strong project management and customer service skills

    + Ability to work as part of a team

    + Ability to engage in the observation and review implementation to refine strategy and plan through an ongoing improvement cycle

    + Experience in collaborating with multiple stakeholders to deliver a common and consistent message to the field in support of Louisiana’s academic strategy

    Minimum Qualifications

    Seven years of experience in education, teaching, or administrative services; OR

     

    Six years of full-time work experience plus four years of experience in education, teaching, or administrative services; OR

     

    A bachelor's degree plus four years of experience in education, teaching, or administrative services; OR

     

    An advanced degree plus three years of experience in education, teaching, or administrative services.

    Job Duties and Other Information

    Job Duties:

    As an Education Consultant 3, you will help to support literacy instruction and professional learning experiences for educators and students across the state. In this role, you will:

     

    + Provide job-embedded field support to assigned school systems and school leaders on effective literacy instruction and support local leaders in implementing literacy initiatives.

    + Develop resources and tools to support instructional leaders and improve literacy outcomes in Birth -12 classrooms.

    + Develop and deliver professional learning statewide literacy initiatives.

    + Collaborate with system leaders, school leaders, and literacy coaches to develop a system- or school-wide focused literacy plan.

    + Ensure that curriculum, instruction, and assessments are monitored and adjusted systematically at both the school and system levels in response to data from multiple sources, such as student work samples, student cognitive data, teacher observation data, and individual growth and coaching plans for teachers and students.

    + Develop and conduct interactive sessions with the field to ensure effective implementation of initiatives and programs with administrators, leaders, principals, and teachers.

    + Assist in the implementation of specific projects to support the goals established by the Division of Literacy, which may include strategic planning, grants, contracts, and administration.

    Position-Specific Details:

    Appointment Type:Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment. The person hired for this position is expected to regularly report to the Baton Rouge office. Current permanent classified state employees may be required to accept a probationary appointment, if selected.

     

    Work Schedule:Work days are Monday - Friday; work hours will be determined.

     

    Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

     

    Compensation: The Education Consultant series have a special entrance rate (SER) of $28.96 that is above the minimum hire rate for these positions. The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
