Definition
Under general supervision, is responsible for installing, testing, maintaining, and repairing power transmission and distribution equipment in support of substation operations; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
+ Inspects, cleans, and repairs, regulators, and switches using new and reconditioned parts;
+ Installs, tests, and repairs transformers in support of distribution or substation;-
+ Records work performed, results of inspections and temperature, current and voltage readings, and inputs information into a computer; utilizes a computer or digital device to obtain and send readings from equipment;
+ Attaches equipment to transformers and related components to test for compliance with standards;
+ Operates pump to drain, filter, and fill transformers with oil; follows environmental procedures for cleanup of oil spills;
+ Inspects and maintains substation and office buildings' lighting, switchgear, sensors, and control and alarm systems;
+ Inspects, repairs, and/or installs controls, reclosers, circuit breakers, DC batteries, and meters in the power distribution system; fills breakers with gas;
+ Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment related to substation equipment; assists power distribution and line crews, especially in emergency weather events;
+ May troubleshoot wiring and connectivity for communications to central computerized control equipment (e.g. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system: SCADA);
+ May clean substations and cut grass around the area.
Minimum Qualifications
One (1) year of experience working with electrical maintenance activities involving high voltage power lines such as electrical power distribution, electrical utility, industrial electrical maintenance, municipal water/wastewater treatment plants, or street lighting equipment. Substitution(s): Successful completion of a formal classroom, vocational training program, or apprenticeship training program related to power distribution may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience.
Possession of a valid, Class B commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing operation of vehicles with air brakes.
Possession of a valid, Class A commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing operation of vehicles with air brakes, by the end of the probationary period.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create aNEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center at 614-645-7439.
The examination process will consist of a computer skills exam weighted 100% covering Electrical Terms, Electricity Principles and Procedures, and Work Safety.
Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
