    UW Medicine Strategic Marketing and Communications has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Marketing and Communications Director for the UW School of Medicine to join their team.

    UW Medicine’s Strategic Marketing and Communications (SMC) team plays a unique and vital role in advancing UW Medicine’s mission to improve the health of all people. We advance UW Medicine’s mission by creating connections to the discoveries, knowledge, and care that improve people’s lives. Our team is comprised of 50+ dedicated professionals who work across a variety of marketing and communications disciplines for both the health system and UW School of Medicine, including brand and marketing strategy, news and media relations, internal and crisis communications, web development, UX/DX strategies, social media, writing, and graphic design.     POSITION PURPOSE

    Reporting to the UW Medicine Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications (Senior Director) serves as the principal marketing and communications leader for the University of Washington’s School of Medicine (SoM). This leadership role is embedded within the centralized SMC team that serves both the SoM and the health system, ensuring unified strategy, messaging, and brand identity across the enterprise.

     

    The Senior Director will work closely with institutional leadership, faculty, and academic departments to advance the school’s reputation in medical education, scientific research, and academic innovation. The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of academic medicine and the ability to integrate messaging across educational, clinical, and research missions.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Strategic Marketing and Communications Leadership (65%)

    + Develop and lead a comprehensive marketing and communications plan and develop strategies to support the medical school’s goals in education, research, recruitment, development, and faculty engagement.

    + Act as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert to medical school leadership on all aspects of medical school messaging, both internally and externally.

    + Oversee the planning and execution of integrated campaigns that elevate the school’s visibility, engage prospective students and faculty, and highlight research and academic innovation.

    + Oversee strategy and content development of key communications platforms for the SoM, including the website and intranet.

    + Foster strong working relationships with SoM executive leadership, chairs, faculty and departmental and administrative staff to support coordinated communication efforts.

    + Ensure alignment of messaging across digital platforms, print materials, and internal channels.

    + Manage editorial strategy and oversee the development and distribution of compelling content that showcases faculty achievements, student success, research impact, and community outreach.

    + Guide thought leadership opportunities and academic storytelling to enhance the school’s national and global reputation.

    + Lead internal communications strategies that support a connected and informed school of medicine community, fostering engagement across faculty, students, and staff.

    + Serve as a key member of the centralized SMC team, helping align SoM communications with institutional and health system priorities.

    + Collaborate closely with colleagues across the SMC team—including media relations, digital strategy, internal communications, and creative services—to ensure coordinated execution of priorities.

    + Partner with SMC brand and digital strategy teams to ensure brand consistency across medical school initiatives and external communications.

    + Partner with SMC internal communications to align messaging with organizational updates, leadership communications, and institutional culture.

    + Develop and implement a framework to better align decentralized SoM communications staff (departments, centers, etc.) to the SoM communication strategy and centralized marketing and communications team.

    + Ultimately support and advance the mission of the SoM and UW Medicine.

    + Related duties as assigned.

    Team Management (35%)

    + Build, develop and lead a high-performing marketing and communications team.

    + Recruit, mentor, and retain top talent across marketing, digital, and communications functions.

    + Set clear goals and performance standards for each team member; provide regular feedback throughout the year in addition to yearly performance reviews.

    + Partner with Dean’s Office HR on coaching, performance improvement and escalated performance issues.

    + Encourage continuous learning and adoption of best practices in marketing and communications; establish training and development opportunities.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    + Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field.

    + Five years of progressively responsible marketing and communications experience, implementing and leading internal and external marketing and communications programs.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    + Exceptional skills in relationship building and collaboration, especially with senior leadership across a matrixed organization.

    + Exceptional organizational skills.

    + Proficient understanding of digital platforms.

    + Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, high-change environment with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

    + Demonstrated ability to create strong results with sometimes-limited resources.

    + High level of computer literacy skills including experience with MS Office Suite.

    + Proven leadership ability and experience managing people.

    + Demonstrated commitment to integrity.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Advanced degree in communications or related field.

    + Ten years of progressively responsible marketing and communications experience, implementing and leading internal and external marketing and communications programs.

    + Prior experience working in a large, complex organization.

    + Prior work in an academic or health system setting.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $170,004.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $180,000.00 annual
