    Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate/Associate

    Job Summary

    The Collins Laboratory is a preclinical behavioral pharmacology laboratory focused on advancing our understanding of substance use disorders with the ultimate goal of developing novel pharmacological and behavioral approaches to treat (poly)substance use disorders. We seek a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual with expertise conducting behavioral and physiologic experiments in rats and mice. As a member of the laboratory, you will play a central role in managing resources, conducting experiments, and overseeing projects. As a key member of our laboratory, you will collaborate with senior members of the laboratory, mentor junior research staff, and have opportunities to develop leadership and research skills.

    Responsibilities*

    + **Resource Management & Compliance**

    + Maintain inventories of supplies and reagents.

    + Monitor performance of laboratory equipment and coordinate with vendors for support when needed.

    + Assist in developing and subsequently manage laboratory SOPs, as well as animal use and chemical safety protocols. Serve as point of contact for laboratory inspections.

    + Maintain records for animal health, laboratory safety, and the use of controlled substances.

    + **Scientific Collaboration & Project Oversight**

    + Collaborate with laboratory personnel (PI, postdocs, graduate students) to optimize experimental procedures and workflow.

    + Oversee industry-funded research projects, and interface with laboratory PI to ensure successful completion of goals as outlined in the statement of work.

    + Maintain electronic data books, analyze experimental outcomes, and provide regular updates of progress at regularly scheduled laboratory meetings.

    + Assist the laboratory PI in managing experimental resources and scheduling use of key equipment.

    + **Hands-On Experimentation**

    + Perform surgical procedures to place intravenous catheters and/or telemetry probes. Maintain surgical records and equipment.

    + Prepare and maintain experimental solutions to ensure sterility.

    + Conduct behavioral and physiologic experiments. Interface with project leads to relay results, troubleshoot issues, and ensure dosing protocols are being adhered to.

    + **Growth & Mentorship**

    + Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory operations.

    + Opportunities to present research findings at local and national scientific meetings and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for publication.

    + Serve as a mentor to junior research staff.

    + Oversee training of new laboratory members.

    Required Qualifications*

    Intermediate Classification

    + B.S./B.A. in Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Psychology, or related discipline.

    + 5+ years of research experience, with direct experience conducting intravenous self-administration and other behavioral experiments with rodents.

    + Expertise in surgical procedures (venous catheterization, telemetry probe implantation) involving rats and mice.

    + Strong foundation in behavioral pharmacology.

    Associate Classification

    + B.S./B.A. in Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Psychology, or related discipline.

    + 3+ years of research experience, with direct experience conducting intravenous self-administration and other behavioral experiments with rodents.

    + Experience with surgical procedures (venous catheterization, telemetry probe implantation) involving rats or mice.

    + A foundation in behavioral pharmacology.

    All Classifications

    + Demonstrated project management skills - organized, detail oriented, with excellent record-keeping.

    + Strong oral and written communication skills - comfortable interacting with researchers at all levels.

     

    In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

    Desired Qualifications*

    Intermediate Classification

    + M.S. in Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Experimental Psychology, or related discipline.

    Intermediate and Associate Classifications

    + Experience in collaborative research environment - strong team player.

    + Experience with Med-PC, Ponemah, MouseOx+, and other relevant behavioral and physiological software packages.

    + Experience interacting with staff of the VA Research Service.

    Background Screening
