The Philosophy Department at Binghamton University, State University of New York, is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a research specialization in some area of Continental Philosophy, understood broadly to encompass historical and contemporary traditions.
The successful candidate will be expected to complement the department's existing strengths and to play an active role in the department's graduate program in Social, Political, Ethical, and Legal Philosophy (SPEL). SPEL is distinctive in supporting a diverse scholarly community engaged with value theory from multiple (including non-western) historical traditions as well as from a variety of contemporary approaches. Excellence in research and an appreciation of pluralism in philosophical inquiry are essential. The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses, supervise teaching assistants, serve on thesis and dissertation committees, direct graduate-level work, and actively participate in department colloquia and other programming.
The teaching load for the position is 2/2. The successful candidate will be expected to regularly teach undergraduate classes that support Binghamton University's large Philosophy, Politics, and Law major. The ability to contribute to the philosophical breadth of our course offerings is also welcome. As a department we are committed to maintaining instructional quality at all levels and place great value on demonstrated teaching effectiveness.
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications
+ Ph.D. in Philosophy, or closely related field, by August 17, 2026.
+ Specialization in an area of Continental Philosophy.
+ Understanding of historical traditions in Continental Philosophy.
+ Understanding of contemporary approaches in Continental Philosophy.
+ Ability to teach graduate-level Philosophy classes in area of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Experience teaching undergraduate classes, either as a teaching assistant or as an instructor.
