    As an auditor on the fraud team, you will screen individual income tax, property tax refund, and withholding tax returns for potential fraudulent claims. You will independently perform audit examinations, research third party sourced data, and communicate with taxpayers and taxpayer representatives. The best fraud auditors are inquisitive, have a great capacity for attention to detail, and can manage large volumes of work efficiently. They also have a thorough knowledge of, and desire to learn, fraud detection techniques and trends.

     

    This position is eligible for hybrid telework. Effective June 1, employees living within 50 miles of the office will be required to work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. Employees may reside outside the state of Minnesota if they live in a state bordering Minnesota and are within 50 miles of the primary work location.

     

    Existing employees who were approved to telework from a bordering state and more than 50 miles from their work location before June 1, 2025, may retain this arrangement unless they move farther away.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Two (2) years of full-time professional experience in accounting, auditing, or fraud investigation.

     

    An associate's degree may substitute for 6 months of experience; bachelor's degree may substitute one (1) year of experience; master's degree substitutes for eighteen (18) months of experience, PhD substitutes for two (2) years of experience.

    Applicants who meet the above experience requirements will be further evaluated during the interview based on the following:

    + Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices

    + Technical knowledge, including court rulings, regulations and administrative policies and procedures

    + Customer service and interpersonal skills

    + Ability to plan, direct, and review the work of others

    + Knowledge of personal computer operation and software programs used by the department in its internal and external operations

    + Communication and presentation skills

    + Knowledge of audit report processing procedures

    + Knowledge of electronic filing/processing systems

    + Skill in reading comprehension

    + Skill in problem-solving

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Experience in reviewing and auditing Individual Income Tax, Property Tax Refund, and/or Withholding Tax returns.

    + Experience in reviewing and auditing tax returns with an emphasis on fraud detection and identity theft detection.

    + Excellent time management skills in order to manage high volumes of work efficiently.

    + Experience in managing and diffusing conflict.

    + Bachelor's degree with a major in Accounting.

    + Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license and/or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) certification.

    Physical Requirements

    Requires occasional moving of articles such as boxes, accounting records, laptop computer, and portable printer.

All individual income tax filing and payment obligations must be current prior to interviewing for this position.
