Research Technician II - Behavioral Neuroscience

We are seeking a full-time Research Technician in the Laboratory of Dr. Abbie Chapman in the Behavioral Neuroscience Program within the Psychology Department at Binghamton University. The Chapman Lab investigates underlying neurovascular mechanisms of dementia using rodent models of heath and disease. We are specifically interested in understanding how the hippocampus and its vasculature are affected across the lifespan during healthy aging, menopause as well as during comorbidities known to accelerate age-related cognitive decline, including chronic hypertension and ischemic stroke. We use a combination of in vivo, ex vivo, in vitro and behavioral and electrophysiological approaches to assess hippocampal hemodynamics, vascular function, neuroplasticity and learning and memory.
Research Responsibilities Include:
+ Handling live rats for behavioral and physiological testing
+ Running behavioral experiments according to detailed protocols
+ Conducting survival and non-survival surgeries and post-operative care
+ Microdissection of the rat hippocampus and its vasculature for pressure myography and electrophysiology studies
+ Administering treatments to rats via intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, as well as via drinking water and food pellets
+ Running molecular assays including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, immunohistochemistry, and Western blot
+ Collecting and processing tissue samples
+ Performing data analysis
Administrative Responsibilities Include:
+ Maintaining complete and accurate laboratory records
+ Coordinate on-going projects within the laboratory
+ Reviewing undergraduate applications to the laboratory
+ Documenting standard operating procedures
+ Maintaining lab organization and a high quality, clean and safe laboratory environment
+ Maintaining lab equipment and coordinating with equipment suppliers for troubleshooting and repair
+ Taking inventory and ordering lab supplies and animal cohorts
Job Requirements:
+ Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Physiology, Psychology or Biological Sciences or related field and one-to-two years of related experience
+ Research experience working with rodents, including in-vivo small animal surgery
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
+ Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail
+ Occasional night, weekend or holiday work will be required
Preferred:
+ Knowledge about the cerebral circulation and/or neurobiology of learning and memory
+ Aptitude for microdissection, electrophysiology, behavioral testing or any combination of the above is highly desirable
Additional Information:
Salary: $45,000 - $50,000 annually. Note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
