POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Warehousing and Data Governance is a key leadership role within the Office of Data and Accountability (ODA) in the Division of Data, Information and Systems Improvement in Boston Public Schools. Reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Data and Accountability, the Director is responsible for overseeing district-wide data systems, leading the design and integration of advanced performance dashboards, and managing a cross-functional team focused on data warehousing, governance, and reporting.
The ideal candidate will bring a strategic mindset, exceptional technical and analytic skills, and strong team management capabilities. This role is central to ensuring that actionable data is readily available and usable across the district to support informed decision-making and equitable outcomes for all students.
RESPONSIBILITIES Serve as Data Warehousing Lead
+ Develop and execute a comprehensive data warehousing strategy aligned with BPS’s goals and in close collaboration with the BPS Technology department.
+ Establish and enforce data governance protocols to maintain accuracy, security, and compliance.
+ Serve as a strategic partner to departments across the district, translating needs into data solutions.
+ Stay current on emerging data technologies and assess their value for the district.
Lead Data Governance
+ Establish and refine documentation, methodology, and quality assurance protocols for internal and external reporting.
+ Design and implement systems for new data collection and analysis (e.g., detailed student ethnicity data).
+ Lead decision-making regarding the development of dashboards and other data products.
+ Develop and implement data governance frameworks, including policies, standards, and procedures to guide data management across the organization.
+ Establish and enforce data policies and standards for data collection, storage, use, and sharing to ensure consistency and compliance.
+ Ensure data quality, accuracy, and security through validation, cleansing, privacy measures, regulatory compliance (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA, COPPA), and access controls.
+ Promote data literacy and collaboration by educating staff on governance principles and working cross-functionally with business, IT, and other stakeholders.
+ Monitor data governance performance, conduct audits, manage metadata, resolve data issues, and track key metrics to drive continuous improvement.
Manage Warehousing and Dashboarding Systems Dashboard Design and Development
+ Oversee the design and deployment of interactive dashboards using Power BI, Looker Studio, or similar platforms.
+ Ensure dashboards are user-centered, actionable, and responsive to district needs.
+ Present data insights clearly and effectively to stakeholders across BPS.
Data Management and Architecture
+ Ensure the accuracy, consistency, and security of data stored and visualized in dashboards.
+ Monitor performance of the data warehouse and implement system optimizations.
+ In collaboration with the BPS Technology department, oversee the integration of data from various sources into a centralized warehouse, ensuring quality and consistency.
+ Lead the design and execution of scalable data architectures (cloud-based and on-premises).
Supervise the Warehousing Team
+ Lead and manage a team of four analysts responsible for data warehousing, reporting, and analysis.
+ Conduct regular supervisory check-ins, provide timely feedback, and foster professional growth.
+ Support team members in developing project plans, conducting high-quality analysis, and generating actionable insights.
+ Develop structures and systems to promote collaboration, cohesion, and continuous improvement among analysts.
Serve as a Department Leader
+ Serve on the ODA Leadership Team alongside other Directors.
+ Help shape and implement department-wide systems for supervision, team management, and communication.
+ Act as a strategic advisor to the Senior Executive Director and Chief of Data, Information and Systems Improvement.
+ Represent the department in external partnerships, stakeholder engagements, and working groups.
+ Support departmental operations including hiring, policy development, budgeting, and cross-department collaboration.
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
+ Bachelor’s degree.
+ At least 5 years of experience in data management and analytics
+ Proficiency in data modeling, ETL processes, and data governance
+ Experience with cloud platforms and BI tools
+ Minimum 2 years supervisory experience with demonstrated success in leading teams to strong outcomes.
+ Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., SQL, Stata, R).
+ Strong data systems management and analytic skills with a high attention to detail.
+ Demonstrated experience coaching individuals and teams, formally or informally.
+ User-centered design experience with iterative feedback loops.
+ Commitment to educational equity and belief in the potential of all students.
+ Exceptional organizational and project management skills.
+ Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
+ Proven ability to communicate complex data to diverse, non-technical audiences.
+ Strong customer service orientation.
+ Experience working cross-functionally and understanding of systems-level thinking.
+ Authorization to work in the U.S.
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED
+ Master’s Degree in a related field.
+ Familiarity with the Ed-Fi data standard.
+ Knowledge of Boston, its neighborhoods, and its public schools.
+ Experience working in or with urban public school systems.
