    DESCRIPTION

    We are looking for a talented Materials Science Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for our location, Stoughton, WI.

     

    This entry level/early career professional, applied materials position utilizes basic knowledge of materials science and engineering principles and practices to identify and advance material solutions to achieve application, design, analysis, manufacturing and quality requirements. The position works cross-functionally on projects that require material science guidance on topics such as material and process selection, failure analysis, material characterization, and material and process expertise on questions pertaining to manufacturing and quality problems.

    In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

    + **Applies Principles of Statistical Methods:** Analyze technical data using descriptive statistics, probability distributions, graphical analysis, and statistical inference; model relationships between variables using ANOVA, regression, and design of experiments to support rigorous, data-driven decisions.

    + **Applies Principles of Surface Engineering:** Implement surface modification techniques to enhance component load-bearing capacity; improve corrosion and wear resistance through thermal treatments, diffusion processes, and hard coatings tailored to diverse environments.

    + **Component Failure Analysis:** Conduct physical and chemical evaluations using laboratory equipment to identify failure modes; assess design intent and operational history to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions that align with material and manufacturing constraints.

    + **Component Material and Process Selection:** Assess component requirements to identify optimal base materials and processing routes; validate selections through targeted testing plans that ensure capability and alignment with functional specifications.

    + **Material Characterization:** Interpret mechanical, chemical, microstructural, and physical properties using appropriate lab tools; correlate findings with field data to confirm robustness and define characterization schedules that meet print and performance requirements.

    + **Technical Documentation:** Capture and communicate technical insights gained through functional activities; enable knowledge transfer and improve productivity by documenting learnings for stakeholders not involved in the original process.

    + **Problem Solving:** Apply systematic analysis and industry-standard methodologies to trace problems, determine assignable causes, and implement robust, data-based solutions; mentor others and ensure systemic root causes are addressed to prevent recurrence.

    + **Collaborates and Communicates Effectively:** Build strong partnerships and deliver multi-mode communications tailored to diverse audiences; make timely decisions, drive results under pressure, pursue self-development, and value diverse perspectives to advance organizational goals.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    To be successful in this role you will need the following:

    + **Analytical Problem-Solving Skills:** Investigate material and processing issues, understand causal mechanisms, recommend corrective actions, and document findings with guidance from experienced team members.

    + **Process Improvement Expertise:** Apply and support enhancements in validation, auditing, and design processes; utilize structured problem-solving methods such as the 7-step approach to drive quality outcomes.

    + **Technical Proficiency in Testing and Analysis:** Use tools and techniques for material characterization, non-destructive testing, mechanical and physical property measurement, simulation, and statistical data analysis to enable informed decision-making.

    + **Cross-Functional Collaboration:** Engage with Quality, Supply Chain, and Engineering teams to gather input, negotiate requirements, and deliver actionable testing and analysis results that support customer success.

    + **Decision-Making Capability:** Make informed decisions regarding material selection, processing optimization, qualification, and inspection that directly impact product reliability, durability, and performance.

    + **Standards and Specification Management:** Apply and refine material specifications and standards to align with evolving requirements, capabilities, and quality expectations.

    + **Independent Execution and Coordination:** Perform established work processes independently while developing technical knowledge; coordinate work among technicians or student employees as needed.

    + **Team Contribution and Influence:** Collaborate effectively within teams, demonstrate influence across work groups, and continuously build proficiency in key competency areas critical to long-term success.

    Education, Licenses, Certifications:

    College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

     

    Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

     

    This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

    Experience:

    Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area. Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred

    + Experience with welding by MiG, TiG or Laser processes, as well as hands-on experience with manual welding a must.

    + Preferred skills: Failure analysis including photography and fractography, sample preparation and microstructure evaluation.
