GENERAL DUTIES
Under supervision, performs work of ordinary difficulty in cleaning public buildings and their immediate grounds; performs related light labor.
There is no Assignment Level for this position. All personnel perform related work. This specification describes typical assignments; related duties may be assigned as needed.
- Sweeps, damp mops, and wet mops office floors, toilets, corridors, lobbies, and other assigned floor areas.
- Cleans washbasins and other toilet room facilities.
- Washes walls by hand with a brush or by using an electric machine.
- Scrubs floors with an electric machine; waxes and polishes floors.
- Hand scrubs stairs and stair landings.
- Empties waste basket and disposes of refuse.
- Vacuums and cleans rugs, carpets, and upholstered furniture.
- Dusts and removes and cleans window coverings such as blinds.
- Performs shoulder high dusting of walls.
- Dusts and polishes furniture and metal work.
- Cleans mirrors and glass in bookcase, doors, and restrooms.
- Washes electric light fixtures.
- Replenishes bathroom supplies in toilets.
- Sweeps sidewalks and removes snow from sidewalks; washes sidewalks and lower portion of buildings with brush and hose.
- Replaces bulbs and fuses.
- Attends a low pressure heating plant.
- May occasionally operate an elevator, move furniture, or act as watch person.
- Reports broken equipment.
- Observes safety and environmental health precautions as directed.
- Puts up safety warnings and/or stanchions for wet floors or other areas for limited access during cleaning.
- Sorts refuse for recycling.
- Cleans small kitchens and/or coffee service areas.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Located in the heart of Harlem, the Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) is dedicated to providing cutting edge graduate degree programs and to designing, implementing, and evaluating public health initiatives that promote population health and social justice. CUNY SPH is currently seeking to hire (2) Custodial Assistants in the Facility Maintenance Operation department for the morning shift and the evening shift.
Reporting to the Facilities Planning Director, the Custodial Assistants will be responsible for the following:
+ Perform cleaning, waste disposal, maintenance, room set-up, light moving, and other facilities-related tasks.
+ Complete recurring tasks as written or assigned, such as floor, surface, appliance and equipment cleaning, readily without prompt.
+ Report cleanliness issues to supervisor, or other Facilities staff, when observed.
+ Report special requests for cleaning and maintenance to supervisor.
+ Communicate with faculty, staff, students, guests, building service professionals and third-party vendors in a courteous and respectful manner.
(1) Morning shift 8 AM to 6:30 PM, and (1) evening shift 10 AM to 8:30 PM. Work shift hours may change due to the business needs of the school.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ 2 or more years of custodial or related experience.
+ Experience using scrubbing machines, buffing machines, and other commercial cleaning equipment for vacuuming and cleaning rugs/carpets.
+ Experience cleaning and maintaining employee pantries, including replenishing supplies.
+ Experience dusting, mopping, and sweeping in offices, conference rooms, open workspaces, and classrooms.
+ Experience setting up rooms for meetings and events ranging from 12 to over 100 attendees.
+ Experience working in a diverse team setting, with a preference for experience in an educational vertical campus building.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no formal education or experience requirements.
There are certain medical and physical requirements as established by University management.
COMPENSATION
New Hire: *$39,922
Incumbent: $41,163
*This amount reflects a salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment only.
