Position Summary:
The Radiation Therapist assists physicians by treating patients with prescribed doses of ionizing radiation supplied and controlled through specialized radiation equipment according to established policies.
What the Radiation Therapist will do:
+ Reviews patient’s medical charts for prescription, treatment time and prescribed dose. Confers with physicians as necessary to clarify orders.
+ Prepares treatment room and equipment, positions patient, provides procedure explanation and information, and monitors patient.
+ Reinforce Radiation Oncologist’s advice to patients regarding side effects to treatment and care.
+ Performs daily warm-ups and performance improvement monitoring of all radiation producing equipment.
+ Pours heated metal alloys into molds to fabricate radiation blocks used to define treatment fields on patients; cuts blocks utilizing power tools for final shaping.
+ Performs simulation duties for tumor localization, for brachytherapy dosimetry, and documents information.
+ Responsible for recognizing equipment malfunctions. Performs minor equipment repairs and contacts authorized services representatives as needed.
+ Checks daily treatment MU and delivers prescribed dose.
+ Responsible for assuring all calculations are double-checked prior to treatment and chart audited within three TX by physics.
+ Responsible for port films on a weekly basis or as needed, and ensuring that any necessary changes are implemented.
+ Transports in-patients to and from Oncology Unit.
+ Attends departmental meetings and technical meetings.
What the Radiation Therapist will need:
+ Registration as a Radiation Therapy Technologist.
+ Completion of a minimum of two years of occupationally specific education beyond high school or associate’s degree in Radiography or a closely related field plus three to six months of on-the-job training.
+ The analytical ability to resolve complex problems requiring the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in-depth, experienced-based knowledge.
