Career Opportunity

The Engineering Technician III reports to the Principal Engineer and performs professional technical work in connection with permits, development and building plans, maps, cost estimating, drafting and design for various Utilities Department construction projects.

The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes:

+ Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS software tools to prepare plans.

+ Experience in drafting complex electric design drawings and solid understanding of electric utility distribution systems.

+ Ability to utilize GPS surveying equipment for documenting and mapping utility infrastructure.

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to understand, interpret, and relay technical information clearly and effectively.

Schedule: 9/80 work schedule (with every other Friday off)

Essential Duties

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

When assigned to Utilities:

+ Configure, maintain, and optimize ESRI’s Utility Network Model (UNM) for electric utility systems.

+ Perform data modeling and migration from legacy GIS/network systems into UNM.

+ Develop and maintain network topology rules, asset connectivity, and utility data integrity.

+ Support field data collection and integration with enterprise GIS systems.

+ Create and publish maps, layers, and services in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Online.

+ Collaborate with engineering, operations, and IT teams to align GIS data with operational systems (OMS, SCADA, work management).

+ Troubleshoot GIS data issues, perform QA/QC checks, and implement data governance standards.

+ Develop documentation, user guides, and provide training for GIS users.

+ Works with and assists construction crews and crew leaders on interpretation of engineering designs and specifications. Checks field construction for conformance to plans and specifications.

+ Coordinates the recording of the department's mapping program with the block book program maintained by the Department of Public Works.

+ Provides technical information from departmental records to other departments and to the public.

+ Performs topographical surveys as required to obtain field data for the design of the department's construction projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:

+ Two years college with emphasis on engineering, construction, design, technical illustration or associated subjects.

and

+ Two years office and field engineering/construction experience.

Special Requirements:

+ Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
