    Job Summary

    The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for the prestigious Horne Endowed Professorship in Accounting, a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position beginning August 2026. This distinguished scholar will also serve as Associate Director of Research for the School of Accountancy, providing leadership in advancing the school’s research reputation. Based on our Hattiesburg, MS campus, the position may also include teaching at the Gulf Park campus (Long Beach, MS) and/or online/hybrid delivery formats.

     

    We seek an accomplished scholar with a record of research excellence, teaching distinction, and commitment to mentoring colleagues and students. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future direction of research in the School of Accountancy, influence the next generation of scholars, and enhance the visibility of the School on a national and international stage.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Research Leadership: Publish in leading accounting journals, enhance the School of Accountancy’s research profile, and mentor faculty in scholarly pursuits. The successful candidate will be expected to foster a culture of high-impact research, secure recognition for the School’s work through collaborations and presentations at premier conferences, and serve as a visible leader in the global accounting research community. By guiding both junior faculty and graduate students, this individual will help strengthen the pipeline of accounting scholars while positioning the School as a hub for innovative research.

    + Teaching Excellence: Deliver high-quality instruction in undergraduate and graduate accounting courses in our bachelor's in Accounting, Master of Professional Accountancy, and/or Master of Business Administration, across in-person, hybrid, and online formats. All areas of teaching will be considered, but the need is greatest in financial accounting.

    + Service & Accreditation: Contribute to the School, College, University, the academy, and profession. Support the School’s separate AACSB accounting accreditation through engagement in continuous improvement and assurance of learning. Service is a vital element of faculty responsibility, as it ensures that the School remains connected to professional, academic, and community stakeholders. Active participation in AACSB accreditation not only sustains our reputation for excellence but also drives innovation in curriculum and assessment, ensuring that students graduate with relevant, high-quality preparation for their careers.

    + Collegial Engagement: Demonstrate a collaborative, team-oriented approach while supporting student success and faculty development. The individual selected must demonstrate a collegial and team-oriented approach to research, teaching, and service. School of Accountancy faculty are actively engaged in scholarly, professional, and pedagogical research to extend the knowledge boundaries of the accounting discipline while maintaining currency in their academic/professional areas(s) of accounting expertise and the School of Accountancy's curriculum. In addition to excelling in research, the successful candidate must be devoted to teaching excellence at the graduate and undergraduate levels and must demonstrate a commitment to student success. All faculty are also required to be actively engaged in our assurance of learning processes.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Earned doctorate in accounting or related field from an AACSB-accredited institution.

     

    Record of consistent publication in top-tier accounting journals.

     

    Meets AACSB “scholarly academic” requirements.

     

    Evidence of excellence in collegiate teaching and service.

     

    Having earned tenure at an AACSB accredited institution.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

     

    + Conduct research leading to publications in top-tier, peer-reviewed accounting journals

    + Deliver high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses in a face-to-face, online, and hybrid format and a commitment to student learning

    + Maintain currency in the individual’s area of expertise within the accounting discipline and bring that knowledge into the classroom

    + Become a fully engaged member of the faculty working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, which includes service to the school, college, university, and profession

    + Demonstrate a history of working well with others in a work environment

    + Active participation in maintaining the currency of the curriculum and in assessment of learning

    + A passion for teaching, engaging with students and student clubs, and mentoring students

    + The ability and willingness to engage with the professional accounting and business community

    + A commitment to continuous improvement in teaching, research and service

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience mentoring or collaborating with faculty on research projects.

     

    Practice experience in the field of accounting or taxation.

     

    Professional certification (CPA, CMA, etc.)

    Location

    The position is based on the Hattiesburg campus (Hattiesburg, MS). We are a multi-site university; therefore, the candidate may be required to teach at the Gulf Park campus (Long Beach, MS) and/or teach online/hybrid courses using various forms of technology.

    The School of Accountancy is separately accredited by AACSB and offers undergraduate and master degrees with an extensive network of alumni in local, state, and federal service. We serve accounting majors on both the Hattiesburg and the Gulf Park campuses. The Hattiesburg area has an estimated population of approximately 150,000 and is one of the fastest growing regions in the State of Mississippi.
