    + Under general supervision, assesses, treats and cares for clients with breathing disorders. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures.

    + Maintain client records and select, assemble, check and operate equipment.

    + Determines requirements for treatment, such as type, method and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosages, compatible with physicians' orders.

    + Educates clients and their families about their conditions and teaches appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises, the use of medications, and respiratory equipment.

    + Enforces safety rules and ensures careful adherence to physicians' orders. Inspects, cleans, tests and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary.

    + Maintains charts that contain clients' pertinent identification and therapy information.

    + Monitors client's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes, and consult with physician if adverse reactions occur.

    + Provides emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

    + Reads the prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews client information to assess patient condition.

    + Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment.

    + Works as part of a team of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals to manage client care

     

    Associate degree in respiratory therapy from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of job-related experience; or one (1) year of experience at the lower level Respiratory Therapy Tech 1 (HCT080) or position equivalent. Note: Must hold current Georgia Respiratory Therapist license.
