About the role

As a Mainframe Application Developer – COBOL & CICS, you will make an impact by designing, developing, and maintaining robust mainframe applications that support critical business operations.

You will be a valued member of the Technology & Engineering team and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including project managers, analysts, and QA engineers.

In this role, you will:

Develop secure, high-quality production code using COBOL, JCL, CICS, IMS, and other mainframe technologies.

Debug and maintain existing applications, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

Collaborate with teams to estimate, plan, and document JIRA stories and development tasks.

Conduct peer code reviews to ensure adherence to architecture standards and security policies.

Identify and implement automation opportunities to improve operational stability and reduce recurring issues.

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is an onsite position requiring 5 days a week in a client or Cognizant office in in Columbus, OH or Wilmington, DE or Plano, TX.

What you need to have to be considered

8+ years of experience in IBM-Z/OS mainframe application development.

Strong proficiency in COBOL, JCL, CICS, IMS, MQ, and VSAM for both batch and real-time processes.

Experience with tools such as CA-7, Intertest, File Aid, TSO/ISPF/SDSF, File Manager, Changeman, and SORT.

Hands-on experience with FTP/NDM/File-Mover and IBM WebSphere MQ.

Expertise in IMS DB, DB2, DB2 SQL, and stored procedures.

Familiarity with CICS Mainview, REXX, CLIST, and debugging tools like Xpediter.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in large teams.

Experience in automating remediation of recurring issues.

Strong documentation and estimation skills using JIRA.

Proven ability to adhere to enterprise architecture and security standards.

Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

Effective communication and stakeholder management abilities.

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT or equivalent

Salary and Other Compensation:

The annual salary for this position is between $60,000 to $93,500 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
