Nature of Work
Under general direction, the Senior Librarian provides reference, knowledgeable instruction, computer literacy, reader’s advisory services, and collection development services. Selects , purchases, and gathers library materials , enforces library policies and procedures, responds to complaints from patrons, supports other Librarians, and ensures safety of patrons and staff.

Work Situation Factors
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.? Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies?

This position is a grade RX17.
Duties and Responsibilities
+ Prepares and provides different programs for the public relating to community interest, needs, and wants; coordinates civic and community engagement, digital learning, early childhood literacy, economic development, education and life-long learning, and job skills.
+ Manages and coordinates collection development; reviews various sources and lists of library books & materials available, evaluates options, selects materials to meet the needs of the community, and recommends additions to the collection; reviews and evaluates current collection and recommends the removal of books and other resources that are no longer appropriate for the collection; manages expenditures and budget.
+ Answer s reference and other types of questions for patrons in person, online, email, and via telephone by utilizing the various collections, online resources, the Internet, or by making referrals ; i nstruct s and assist s patrons in their use of library resources, print, electronic resources ; provides notary services.
+ Oversees staff providing training, supervision, and evaluation; assigns duties and ensures completion of designated tasks.
+ Constantly re-evaluates materials in assigned selection areas to maintain good physical condition and relevance of the collection by repairing, replacing, and withdrawing items as well as evaluating gifts to the collection.
+ Enforce s library policy and procedures, maintain situational awareness, resolve difficult questions and complaints from patrons and ensure safety of patrons and staff; respond to problems and patron complaints; provide solutions when tenable.
+ Troubleshoots problems with personal computers, photocopiers, printers and other library equipment, including accessing the collections via downloadable materials; assist patrons with computer reservation system and the general use of Office software and the Internet.
+ Reviews, maintains, and updates records in various formats, mediums, and automated systems to ensure data integrity and adherence to internal controls, practices, and policies; demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless services.
+ Purchases materials for the library non-fiction and fiction collection. Maintain a current and attractive collection by evaluating, weeding, and purchasing materials in accordance with city policy and patron needs.
+ M aintains the Library's website by updating the pages with current information; ensures online calendar is updated with current programming information; redesigns and updates the library website to provide the public with easier access to needed information.
+ Assists with the selection and purchase of various library materials; reviews the catalog record and spine labels of newly purchased material to ensure they are correct .
+ Collects, gathers, and compiles statistics on usage for the library's databases and room usage ; prepares and processes a variety of departmental report s including operational and statistical report s ; prepares press releases and makes recommendations for improvements to library operations.
+ Maintains expertise in field of service through participation in applicable educational opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
Masters in Library Science and three (3) years of experience as a Librarian. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Licenses/Certification(s)
Valid driver’s license may be required or preferred. If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.

Knowledge of: principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to the operations and functions of the position and services provided; current principles of record keeping and records management; principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
Ability to: perform a variety of duties and responsibilities and assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands to meet deadlines; ensure appropriate levels of customer service to achieve expectations and meet objectives; read, understand, and assure compliance with a variety of policies, procedures, rules, standards, and regulations governing related activities and functions; collect applicable information and maintain accurate and timely records; maintain confidentiality of information and data; communicate effectively orally and in writing and use interpersonal skills to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive work direction; prepare and present accurate and reliable information and reports; establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public; safely and effectively operate relevant tools, equipment, and motorized vehicles; navigate across even and uneven surfaces; timely and accurately enter data and update records using various mediums and formats; take initiative and exercise sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines and carry out primary responsibilities in accordance with all governing regulations, statutes, and procedures to ensure achievement of goals and objectives.
