    Description

The General Services Department – Facilities Maintenance Division supports the full range of City-owned public assembly and cultural facilities. Within this division, the SevenVenues Maintenance Team is responsible for keeping Norfolk’s premier entertainment and performance venues operating safely, reliably, and ready to host events of all sizes. These venues include Scope Arena, Chrysler Hall, Attucks Theatre, Harrison Opera House, Harbor Park, MacArthur Memorial, and Wells Theatre. Maintenance staff ensure that the behind-the-scenes infrastructure is dependable so that the City can continue offering a vibrant schedule of concerts, shows, sports, and community events.

The Maintenance Mechanic II – SevenVenues performs hands-on building and mechanical maintenance across a portfolio of entertainment and performance facilities. This position responds to service requests, performs corrective and preventive maintenance, and supports the wide variety of needs that arise in busy public assembly buildings. The incumbent will troubleshoot and repair equipment, lighting, plumbing, and building components, assist contractors with access to work areas, and ensure that facilities are maintained in safe, functional condition to support event operations.

This role requires someone who is proactive and attentive to their surroundings—identifying deficiencies that may impact the public or disrupt events, documenting findings, and initiating work orders as needed. Effective communication, mechanical aptitude, and professionalism when interacting with tenants and event staff are essential.

    Essential Functions

+ Perform maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, plumbing, lighting, and mechanical systems in assigned venues.

+ Complete preventive maintenance tasks to ensure venue readiness and safe building operations.

+ Proactively monitor facilities during events, identify deficiencies that could impact customers or the public, and initiate work orders for corrective action.

+ Respond to radio calls and work order assignments in real time; prioritize urgent repairs to minimize event impact.

+ Use the City’s computerized work order system (Asset Essentials or equivalent) to document work performed, time, and materials, and to generate work orders for observed issues.

+ Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and venue tenants regarding repair needs and progress.

+ Follow all OSHA, City, and venue safety procedures to ensure safe maintenance operations.

    Education/Experience

High school diploma or GED required; additional vocational or technical coursework in building trades (carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, or electrical) preferred.

    Required:

+ Two to four years of progressively responsible experience performing building, grounds, or facilities maintenance, preferably in a unique environment such as a zoo, park, aquarium, or public assembly facility.

    Work Schedule:

+ This position works a first shift schedule, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with rotating off-days to align with event schedules. Occasional flexibility is required to support urgent issues or high-priority event-related needs across SevenVenues facilities.

    Signing Bonus:

+ This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

+ Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

+ Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

+ Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
