Students will receive a project at the beginning of the summer and present it in our project expo at the end of the summer.     Job Description

    Job Summary/Objective:

    The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to help early career professionals bring together formal learning and

     

    productive work to improve their ability to transition from school to work. Southwire provides interns and co-ops with

     

    •real world” applications of their academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and consideration for employment

     

    after graduation. Each student will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of

     

    study and be responsible for developing a timeline, progress updates, and final delivery in a senior leadership expo.

     

    Note: All new interns and co-ops must begin in the summer rotation.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Your intern assignment is generally 10-12 weeks, and co-op assignment is generally 16-18 weeks and

     

    will include an assigned project and opportunities to present your work.

     

    • You will also collaborate on other exciting projects and work with talented peers and inspirational

     

    leaders, many of whom began as interns and co-ops themselves.

     

    • You will be provided a robust developmental experience through an immersive onboarding and

     

    offboarding experience, assigned a mentor, networking opportunities, organized events, activities, and

     

    community service /volunteer initiatives.

     

    • You will have the opportunity to impact the future of the organization, all the while being exposed to

    a world-class program community.

    Long Description

    Position Summary

    We are seeking a motivated Electrical/Mechanical Engineering student to join our High Voltage Cable Design team for a summer internship. This role offers hands-on experience in the design and analysis of high-voltage cable systems and their accessories, with a focus on electrical performance and installation practices.

    Key Responsibilities

    The intern will work under the guidance of senior engineers and will be involved in the following activities:

    1. Electrical Analysis & Simulation

    + Perform studies of induced voltages during short-circuit faults (phase-to-ground) for both internal and external fault conditions.

    + Analyze the impact of impulse waves and residual voltage of sheath voltage limiters (SVL) to assess:

    + Potential damage to insulating components of cable accessories.

    + Maximum allowable length of bonding cables.

    + Utilize simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL Multiphysics) for electromagnetic and transient analysis.

    1. Design & Drafting

    + Develop typical installation drawings for high-voltage cable systems, including:

    + Cable arrangements on riser poles, air-insulated substations (AIS), and gas-insulated substations (GIS).

    + Grounding details for manholes and other structures.

    + Work with AutoCAD and SolidWorks to create accurate and detailed engineering drawings.

    1. Documentation & Reporting

    + Prepare technical reports summarizing analysis results, design considerations, and recommendations.

    + Assist in creating standard installation guidelines and best practices.

    Qualifications

    + Minimum 2.5 GPA.

    + Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.

    + Reliable transportation to and from work.

    + Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

    + Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or other relevant tools.

    + Strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, particularly in power systems and high-voltage engineering.

    + Familiarity with short-circuit analysis, transient phenomena, and insulation coordination is a plus.

    + Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and COMSOL Multiphysics (or similar simulation tools).

    + Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

    + Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
