Job Description
SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) Technician III oversees field operations for locating and designating underground utilities. This includes operating vacuum excavation trucks and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), managing field crews, and ensuring safety compliance. The role emphasizes leadership, utility research, client coordination, and training junior staff.
Key Responsibilities:
-Utility Locating: Uses GPR and radio-detection tools to identify underground utilities (gas, water, sewer, fiber, etc.).
-Vacuum Excavation: Safely exposes utilities using vacuum trucks.
-Crew Supervision: Leads and trains junior field staff.
-Documentation: Produces field sketches, measurements, and daily reports.
-Safety & Traffic Control: Implements MOT plans and adheres to safety standards.
-Stakeholder Communication: Coordinates with clients, utility owners, and surveyors.
-Records Research: Reviews utility records and construction plans.
-Standards Knowledge: Familiar with ASCE 38-02 and ASCE 38-22.

Skills and Requirements
• Experience: Typically requires a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in utility
locating or SUE field work.
• Read and interpret utility records, as-built drawings, and other project plans to aid in the identification and mapping process.
• Collect, record, and document utility data, including locations, depths, and types of
utilities, and create field sketches, maps, and reports.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with utility locating equipment, GPR, electromagnetic
locators, and vacuum excavation trucks.
