Job Summary:
A Patient Care Tech (PCT) at ProMedica plays a vital role in the health and safety of our patients every day. From caring for patients to performing clerical services, a PCT helps all members of the ProMedica health care team while complying with standards, procedures, and policies. A PCT is a genuine ambassador for ProMedica as they interact with patients, visitors, and co-workers.
The PCT assists the patient care team with exams, procedures, obtaining patient data and other processes related to direct patient care. The PCT also ensures an appropriate stock of supplies and equipment is available and functioning properly.
In this role, you will perform tasks related to scheduling procedures, coordinating admission as well as discharge and transfer processes. PCTs answer phones, take messages, and direct calls. You will also pick up and deliver specimens, documents, and other items to contribute to operational efficiency.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

+ The PCT demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development. Recognizes characteristics of developmental levels for infants, children, adolescent, adults, geriatrics, and the mentally disabled; Considers the developmental level of the patient when providing care; Demonstrates the ability to identify age/developmental specific data, the ability to recognize age/developmental specific response to treatment, provides appropriate data to other caregivers, and involves family and/or significant other in decision-making related to plan of care.
+ Delivers appropriate direct patient care, pursuant to patient needs, as assigned. This includes but is not limited to answering call lights, obtaining vital signs, ambulation, position and transferring needs, assisting with nourishment needs, personal hygiene, specimen collection, intake and output collection, elimination needs, checking blood glucose levels, and safe utilization of patient equipment (application, and documentation of restraints, trapeze, CPM, EPC, SPH etc.).
+ Completes hourly rounds on patients, addressing the 4 p‘s – pain, potty, personal needs, and positioning. Assures patients rooms are kept clean, neat, equipment in place, old or unused articles discarded, clothing in closet and trash emptied as needed. Reports significant findings and unresolved patient needs to registered nurse.
+ Collects patient data as directed; recognizes and reports abnormal vital signs, symptoms, condition changes, patient events and patient responses to treatment to the registered nurse. Documents collected data as appropriate.
+ Assists in preparing patients, physically and psychologically for treatments, procedures, and studies; Assists with patient/family teaching, as appropriate.
+ The PCT performs a variety of clerical duties. Demonstrates knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations through correct and appropriate utilization, Answers telephone and relays messages accurately and appropriately. Transcribes physician orders accurately, legibly, and in a timely fashion; Completes order entry, maintains patient chart, compiles routine reports, maintains logbooks, completes charges, and schedules appointments/treatments/procedures as requested.
+ Maintains a safe, secure, and clean environment for patients and families; implements appropriate safety measures. This includes but not limited to fall prevention, infection control, and cleaning of equipment. Utilizes principles of universal precautions.
+ Safeguards hospital supplies, property, and equipment from damage,misuse, or loss. Efficiently uses supplies and inventory. Orders supplies and maintains par levels as requested. Restocks supply areas as needed. Reports supply and equipment concerns appropriately.
+ Responds to beeper calls and code situations as directed. Familiar with appropriate duties in critical situations.
+ Investigates and reports to the director/supervisor promptly any problem relating to patient care, unit, and/or personnel. Initiates variance reports appropriately, including reporting to director/supervisor promptly. Reports hazards promptly.
+ Assists with orientation of new personnel. p. 3
+ Has a commitment to the continuous improvement of service that meets the needs and expectations of our patients, physicians, payers, employees, and the community we serve.
+ Uses appropriate methods to communicate with patient and/or family/significant other which includes, but not limited to: Proper phone etiquette, tone of voice, speaking slowly and distinctly, repeating instructions several times, using simple medical terms.
+ Transports patients to and from department; Acts as courier in transporting supplies, cultures, and specimens to and from department.
+ Performs other related duties as assigned.
+ Women Center - Notary Public designation for completion of birth certificates (non-Women’s Center based PCT’s would be exempt from this duty).
REQUIREMENTS
+ Education: High school graduate
+ Skills: Clerical skills, computer skills and ability to use office equipment. Experience or coursework in medical terminology required or pass medical terminology test. Ability to pass competencies of the position. Must have an even temperament and pleasant personality. Ability to handle frequent contacts with a variety of individuals. Maintain emotional stability in variable situations. Facilitates interdepartmental communications and relationships. Effective communication skills and service-oriented attitude.
+ Certification:STNA certification required for those hired after 3/26/2016. Any employee hired prior to 3/26/2016 will be grandfathered w/o STNA certification. CPR certified.
