    The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University is seeking a proactive and skilled Health and Safety Specialist to support the development and implementation of comprehensive health and safety programs.

     

    This position will primarily focus on the Stanford Redwood City campus, while also contributing to a diverse range of EH&S initiatives across various departments and disciplines throughout the university.

     

    In this role, you will independently conduct safety audits and assessments, identifying and evaluating workplace hazards such as chemical exposure risks and ergonomic concerns. You will manage health and safety projects from initiation through completion and act as a key liaison between local operational teams and EH&S subject matter experts in safety, environmental, and emergency management areas.

     

    We are looking for a candidate with a solid foundation in health and safety practices, strong leadership skills, and proven project management experience. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain broad exposure to high impact EH&S programs, providing a level of experience and involvement not typically available at this career stage.

    In this role, you will:

    + Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.

    + May develop and conduct employee and student training, emergency preparedness activities, and/or assurance and accreditation programs.

    + Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) that could be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.

    + Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace.

    + Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potential.

    + Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations.

    + Act as a lead or technical expert and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on health/safety programs.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Education & Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and three years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

    To be successful in this position, you need to bring:

    + Demonstrated ability to lead the development and implementation of safety programs specific to the Redwood City Campus.

    + Ability to effectively collaborate with local emergency services to implement realistic simulations that provide participants with valuable experience in responding to emergencies.

    + Ability to maintain and establish relationships with local regulatory agencies to stay informed about compliance requirements and ensure the campus meets all necessary health and safety standards.

    + Ability to independently conduct regular safety audits and inspections identifying and assessing potential work environment hazards.

    Preferred Certifications and Licenses:

    Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver’s License.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

    + Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks.

    + Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.

    + Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.

    + Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.

    + Ability to drive day or night.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    + Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.

    + May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals

    + May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.

    + When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

    + Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.

    + Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.

    _The expected pay range for this position is $119,362 to $132,000 per annum._

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate including but not limited to geographic location, knowledge, skills and abilities, relevant education, depth and breadth of experience, performance; as well as other business and organization needs such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the minimum qualifications, departmental budget availability, and market and internal equity across the unit, department and reporting relationships._
