    The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) (http://dpss.umich.edu/) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment.     Job Summary

    At the forefront of the U-M Division of Public Safety and Security's mission is the protection of individuals and assets. Faculty, staff, student, and visitor safety is paramount. To lessen the probability of physical harm coming to our campus, we must provide a multidisciplinary approach to identifying, assessing, and mitigating the potential of intentional violence. We are actively recruiting a Behavioral Threat Assessment Investigative Specialist. Reporting to the Director, Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management, you will be responsible for investigating and coordinating behavioral threat assessments within Michigan Medicine and across the enterprise.

    Responsibilities*

    You will:

    + Investigate highly sensitive and urgent real-time threat concerns, including potential threats of and/or acts of violence by affiliated or unaffiliated individuals that may affect the university community and develop safety protocols.

    + Facilitate intake, triage, and screening of new reports, identifying levels of concern, gathering additional information using internal and open-source techniques, and seeking clarification from reporters as needed.

    + Conduct threat assessment interviews with another threat assessment team member using structured professional judgment tools.

    + Monitor and track reports to ensure compliance with recommendations, conduct ongoing assessments, and address new or emerging concern.

    + Maintain high-quality analysis and documentation of work (e.g., notes, report files) in the database system. Collect and analyze collateral interviews, documents, and other information relevant to violence risk assessments. Document completed assessments, management actions, and interventions.

    + Assist Threat Assessment leadership, participating on the Threat Assessment Team (TAT), a multidisciplinary committee with members from various stakeholder offices across campus. This includes leading meetings and coordinating reports as needed.

    + Conduct educational and outreach efforts on critical topics related to Threat Assessment (e.g., behaviors of concern, de-escalation techniques, reporting process) through in-person and virtual presentations, social media, traditional marketing materials, and other multimedia efforts.

    + Assist in developing and maintaining knowledge of enterprise resources, policies, and procedures relevant to the Threat Assessment Program. Assist with reviewing and updating the Threat Assessment Program and creating resources for the program.

    + Collaborate and liaise with various departments within Michigan Medicine to assess risks, develop workplace violence response and planning, and provide training to mitigate potential threats to promote a safe and secure environment for all members of the Michigan Medicine Community.

    + Take on additional assignments based on office needs, including policy and procedure review and development, assessment creation, and database management.

    + Ensure compliance with existing laws, rules, regulations, and privacy requirements.

    + Maintain adherence to professional ethical standards in threat assessment.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in security management, criminal justice, psychology, social work or related field

    + At least two (2) years in education, training and/or work experience in threat assessment, managing responses to high-risk reports and/or crisis situations

    + Five years of operational knowledge and experience in investigations, personal safety, security management, law enforcement, intelligence, protective investigations and/or threat assessment

    + CTM or commitment to become certified within two (2) years of employment date

    + Strong knowledge of safety regulations, threat assessment methodologies, and emergency response protocols

    + Ability to maintain confidentiality, handle sensitive information discreetly, and exercise sound judgment in high-pressure situations

    All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
