Description
We are looking for a postdoc who will work under the guidance of Prof. Vincent Aleven in the HCI Institute, with additional guidance provided by Dr. Steve Ritter at Carnegie Learning Inc., a Pittsburgh-based company. The postdoc will work on an IES-funded project:
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and Carnegie Learning, Inc. will team up to address challenges teachers face in the context of mathematics learning in blended middle school classes that use intelligent tutoring software (ITS). Although well-designed analytics-based teacher support tools promise to support teachers in running personalized K-12 classrooms, there is very little scientific knowledge regarding how this kind of tool affects teachers and students - nor how tools could provide not only awareness support to teachers (informing the teacher about students’ progress and struggles) but also decision support (making suggestions for whom to help and how), with potentially even greater impact. The researchers will design an analytics-based mixed-reality teacher support tool ("teacher smart glasses") through co-design sessions with teachers and students, hone the tool through prototyping, test it through classroom pilotring, and conduct classroom studies to rigorously evaluate effects on teachers and students of the took and of key tool features (namely, real-time awareness support and decision support for teachers). The project will produce a new teacher orchestration tool, Lumilo 2, running on mixed-reality devices (smart glasses) so teachers can keep their eye on the class. The project will produce new scientific insight into how real-time analytics-based tools affect teacher help and, in turn, student learning. The project may lead to a more personalized K-12 math classroom.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: PhD in learning technologies, human-computer interaction or a related field. Experience in implementing educational technology and conducting educational technology research.
Preferred classifications: Experience with K-12 classroom research. Experience with designing, developing, and evaluating AR/VR applications. Strong publications record.
